Photos: Quiz photos are 1 to 10, running from top to bottom [PlessPix]
I thought I’d throw in a little quiz for readers of this blog based on yesterday’s pre-season friendly between Metro and Kingborough Lions United at North Chigwell.
The quiz is based on the above photographs taken at the match, so we’ll see how eagle-eyed readers can be.
Before the quiz, however, here are a few sidelights to the game.
The Lions won 4-0, of course, and looked in fine form, despite this being only their second practice match.
Coach Geoff Freeman was absent. He was returning that afternoon from interstate, so his coaching partner, Tim Dale, was in charge.
The Lions’ first-aid man Bernard Siggins was there. He was celebrating his 50th year with the club, if you include Caledonians, who merged with Kingborough a few years ago. Well done, Bernie! That really is a milestone for an individual.
David Abbott has joined the Lions from Taroona and his brother, Will Abbott, from the National Training Centre Tasmania, also played.
Will has been trialling with Brisbane Roar and will be go to the A-League club for another month in July.
It was good to see three officials, including referee Ian Colhoun, in charge of the game. Brad Hughes did a line in the first half, but a third official duly arrived in time for the second half. She had been told the match was at 2pm, whereas in fact, it kicked off at 1pm.
Kingborough won the reserves curtain-raiser 4-1. There were some first-teamers in the reserves, so things are looking good for the Lions in terms of the depth of their squad.
Well, put your specs on and have a look at the photos.
Photos 1, 2, 3 and 4: Kingborough have about six pairs of brothers playing for, or involved with, the club. Can you name four sets of brothers from these four photographs?
Photo 5: Spot two odd things in the respective teams’ strips.
Photo 6: Why could one say this is Marcus Bremner’s ball, despite the attentions of the Metro defender?
Photo 7: Who are the two players performing like seals with the ball while Ryan Bevan watches.
Photo 8: Was this photo taken during the course of the match or in the warm-up? How can you tell?
Photo 9: How many goalkeepers did Metro use in the match?
Photo 10: What’s unusual about the goalposts at North Chigwell? And, for those who regularly attend games at North Chigwell, what was missing from behind the goal at the western end of the ground, at about the spot this photo was taken from?

Gee if Kingbourghs reserves are making Kingbourgh have good depth then Beachside must be a top 4 contender didn't Beach reserves beat Kingbourgh reserves 3-1? Good to see Dave and Will playing together .. Well done to Ziggy as well
Hi Walter,
I haven't been to a game at Metro for a few years, but for pic 10 ... it's the wheelbarrow.
Keep up all the great work you are doing on here Walter. It really keeps me informed of whats going on in the game of Tassie Football since i've moved to NSW.
Regards
Allan Grundy
walter part 2 to your photo 10 question would be the wheel barrow.
photo 8 is in warm up because the player behind nathan grandin did not come on until the second half when grandin was not keeping.
also metro fielded 2 keepers in the match
Walter, Borough won the match 4-0 (not 4-2)
Photo 1-4 The brothers are: Damien & Trent Pearce (both played 1sts); Will & David Abbott (both played firsts); Ross & Adam Hinkley (both played ressies); Phil (coach of U19s) & Dave Cooper (1sts); you can also add Marc (1sts) & Chris Iseli (ressies)
Photo 8 - was taken during the warm up because Nike balls were used during the match.
Photo 9 - Metro used two keepers (different one in each half)
and I think Borough won the curtainraiser 5-1 (not 4-1)
Allan
Spot on, Mate. The wheelbarrow wasn't brought out until the end of the game.
Cheers!
Walter
Anonymous 3.04pm, you're right. It's the wheelbarrow.
Cheers!
Anonymous 3.07pm, you are correct. It is the warm-up. Nathan Grandin played in the first half and Alex Dand was the keeper in the second.
Cheers!
Anonymous 4.06pm, correct on all counts. Thank you for pointing out the typo in the score. It was indeed 4-0. And, thanks for mentioning all the other brothers involved. Kingborough seems to be a real family club.
And yes, two keepers were used, Nathan Grandin in the first half and Alex Dand in the second.
And, the ball is the vital clue. Nike balls were used in the match and that ball in the photo of the keeper is not a Nike ball.
Well done!
Cheers!
Anonymous 4.11pm, I arrived just at the end of the reserves match and got different scores from different people. Some said 4-1 and others 5-1. Just goes to show I should have asked referee!
Kingborough's ressies yesterday was vastly different to the squad of mostly kids that turned out last week. Don't get your hope too high Anon 1:56pm
Are the Metro posts steel and the crossbars are not capped (saw a keeper in an U/19 match texting and then popped his phone into the crossbar when his goal came under attack. Funny to watch. Not sure how he was texting with keeper gloves on though. Determined might be the best way of describing it.
Would you say the was Bremner's (photo 6) or would you say it was Kingborough's. It has the KLUSC on the ball.
Is Kingborough one of the last clubs to change their name to become a football club instead of a soccer club??
Hi Walter in my books it was 4-1
at least i was sleep, first goal
penalty gift from the ref.
second goal another gift from the ref
as metro player had his arm no to far from the body but questioned as rule said the arm need to hit the ball no the other way around, but could live with that decision.
third goal kingboroug player beat all the defender but decide to pass the ball to a team mate who is a few steeps in front of him, in my ayes is call off side, the four goal was an excellent goal
there at least I was sleep 4-1 is the tally, to metro credit we miss a penalty and created a few chances in front of goal with goal keeper making some good decision, credit to him, but very unlucky the players never follow up with intensity to put in the net, kingboroug play a steep better than us but goals win games, if we where to have those much needed chances it and the ref decision where to be the right ones it would have been another story, but 4-1 is for now

Anonymous 5.07pm, you are right. The crossbars aren't capped.
That's a great story about the goalkeeper texting!!!
Cheers!
Anonymous 5.14pm, yes, you are right. The ball is marked as belonging to Kingborough Lions United Soccer Club.
Cheers!
So what's the oddities about the strips??
I think by your slightly inaccurate description of the incidents in the game you may well have been asleep. Goal scorers for Boro were Kerr (2), Taylor, Iles & Watkins.
Walter, did the tis play yesterday ? if so what was the result.
Anon 5.14pm
Ulverstone is still a soccer club making us USC.
If it were to change we would be UFC! We had a young fella by the name of Ethan Duniam leave the club to concentrate on Mixed Martial Arts. This change might see him return.

Grass at North Chigwell may be long but it normally holds up well considering the traffic on it throughout the season.
Watch out for the Lions Den to be another mudbath come June / July! Woeful surface that obviously doesn't get the atention it requires. Looks like Wembley in February though.
with the strips, all the metro players in the photo are wearing different socks
answer to number ten is ernest hemingway......seriously, well done siggy, great guy heart of gold he used to always encourage me and say great thigs to me about my play.always positive.all the best to a cocky wee callie

In photo 5 (and clearly visible in photo 6), Marcus Bremner's shirt has brown and blue stripes, not black and blue stripes. I think one other player had such a shirt. Perhaps the dye has run during washing.
