Clarence United throw away two points

Clarence United stayed third and Kingborough Lions United moved up a place to fourth after they drew 3-3 in their Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League soccer match at Lightwood Park today.

A blunder by goalkeeper Jason Voss, following Damien Pearce’s back-pass in the 11th minute, gave Clarence the lead, but Marcello Marchioli equalised in the 27th minute after excellent work down the right by Ryan Bevan and a clever dummy inside the box by Tom McDonald.

Brett Andrews put Kingborough ahead in the 45th minute after Marc Iseli had nodded down Marchioli’s free-kick.

Charles White blasted home the third from Bevan’s cross deep into stoppage time to give the home side a 3-1 lead at the break.

Luke Cripps struck twice for Clarence in the second half to make it 3-3, but Cripps spurned the opportunity to complete his hat-trick and earn a win for the visitors when he missed a penalty four minutes from the end.

Cripps made it 3-2 in the 58th minute when Chris Hunt’s corner was cleared by White, but only as far as Parker. He hit the ball towards the far post, where Toby Ling knocked it across goal for Cripps to force home.

Seven minutes from the end, Clarence again made good use of corners. The Kingborough defence partially cleared a corner from the left, but when Julian McMahon lobbed the ball back in from the right, the ball was deflected to Crisp, who side-footed it home and make it 3-3.

Pearce then brought down Clarence substitute Andrew Barron for the penalty, but Crisp, who has only scored one hat-trick in his senior career, placed his spot-kick high and wide of the target.

In Division One, Taroona scored a convincing 6-0 away win over Nelson Eastern Suburbs at North Warrane, Hugo Luttmer hitting a hat-trick and Marcus Atkinson, Duncan Carey and Jack Elliot scoring a goal apiece.

The win kept Taroona in first place on goal-difference over second-placed Metro.

Traoona’s goal-difference is plus 23, while Metro’s is plus 22. Both sides have 10 points.

In the Premier League Reserves, Clarence beat Kingborough 5-2, while in the Division One Reserves, Taroona downed Nelson 3-2.

In the Premier League Under-19s, Clarence easily beat Kingborough 8-1, while in the Division One Under-19s, Taroona scraped home 3-2 against Nelson.

South Hobart stayed top of the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League ladder with this comfortable 3-1 win over New Town Eagles, who are second-last.

A minute’s silence was observed before the game in memory of Eagles’ Adam Shackcloth’s uncle, who passed away during the week.

Eagles did well to contain South Hobart for 25 minutes, but they then fell behind to a goal by Jonathon Ladic.

Ladic scored with a shot that had little, if any, back-lift and it seemed to confuse keeper Michael Soszynski, who seemed to start to go one way before hesitating and then being caught flat-footed as the ball sneaked in at his right-hand post.

The move had been started down the right by Liam Scott, and it was Kanakaris, making his debut for South after signing from Hobart Olympic during the week, who passed the ball inside to Ladic, who was just outside the penalty area.

South continued to threaten for the remainder of the half, with Julius Ross shooting wide on the half-hour, and Ricky Eaves shooting over the bar from a good position after a build-up involving Ross and Scott.

Eagles’ solitary chance came in the 40th minute when Cormac Collins’s corner from the right found Adam McKeown at the far post, but his header was smothered.

Eagles replaced Matthew Ryback with Alex Gordon at the interval and they moved Alex Leszczynski into a defensive role.

Kanakaris made it 2-0 for South in the 59th minute when he converted Scott’s low cross from the byline on the right from close range.

Soszynski was so incensed that he muttered some words at the assistant referee, presumably about Scott having been off-side, and was sent off by Mr Gadd.

Craig Minty came on in goal, while Jacob Kavanagh was the unfortunate out-field player to be sacrificed.

In the 71st minute, David Abbott was put through on goal, but his shot came back off the left-hand post.

Four minutes later, Kanakaris shot wide as South sought to increase their lead.

Hugo Bladel came on for Shae Hickey in the 79th minute and, with virtually his first touch, sent Scott away down the right.

Scott played the ball through to Eaves, who neatly eluded Chris Wass inside the box and beat Minty at the near post to make it 3-0.

Eagles pulled a goal back in the 88th minute when McKeown beat Sam Kruijver to Jacob Malakoff’s pass to the edge of the box and just got a toe to the ball to slot it home.

But, it was far too little and far too late for the visitors to alter the outcome.

  • South Hobart coach, Ken Morton, said:

“A load of crap.

“Not the prettiest of games.

“In the end, we got three points and I think we deserved that over the 90 minutes.

“The sending off of the goalkeeper obviously changed the mood of the game as well.

“But, White Eagles play with a good spirit and a good determination and they have some exciting young players and I wish them all the best for the remainder of the season.

“We, now, I think, have turned the corner.

“Hughie Ludford will come back next week, Gary Upton will come back next week, hopefully, and then I think we can start to threaten teams again obviously try and get a bit more settled as a unit and everybody working together again.”

  • New Town Eagles coach, George Krambousanos, said:

“I thought it was a good game, actually.

“A bit disappointing with the decision of the goalkeeper. I think he was taken off because he swore. I don’t know if it was direct to the referee or not, but anyway, the referee has to make a decision and he made his decision.

“I’ll accept that and the club will, too.

“I honestly think we still could have got back into the game and, like every week, we seem to score that late goal. We seem to come over teams, so we really don’t know what could have happened.

“I don’t think they played their normal game. They lost a little bit of flow.

“I think we’re improving slowly and I think we showed that today even though we lost.”

South Hobart and Tilford Zebras open up a 3-point lead at the top

South Hobart and Tilford Zebras have opened up a 3-point lead at the top of the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League ladder after both won comfortably today.

South Hobart beat second-last New Town Eagles 3-1 at South Hobart, while Tilford Zebras accounted for bottom-side University 2-0 at Olinda Grove.

Hobart Olympic moved up a place to sixth on the ladder after downing Glenorchy Knights 2-1 at KGV Park on Friday night.

South Hobart took the lead against Eagles in the 26th minute when Jonathon Ladic’s disguised shot from 20 metres left goalkeeper Michael Soszynski flat-footed.

Kostas Kanakaris, who signed for South from Olympic in mid-week, scored on his debut, netting in the 59th minute from Liam Scott’s low cross from the right.

Soszynski vented his anger at conceding the goal and was sent off by referee Dirk Gadd for using inappropriate language directed at an official.

South Hobart’s David Abbott hit the post in the 71st minute before Ricky Eaves added their third eight minutes later, beating substitute goalkeeper Craig Minty at the near post after a good build-up involving Hugo Bladel and Scott.

Eagles netted a consolation goal two minutes from the end through Adam McKeown, who beat keeper Sam Kruijver to a through-ball from Jacob Malakoff.

Carl Larzabal put Olympic ahead against the Knights in the 7th minute after Adam Hedge flicked on Chris Tsakiris’s corner.

Knights coach Eamonn Kelly then pulled an Easter bunny from a hat and brought on substitute James Hope, who equalised two minutes before the interval.

Olympic substitutes Michael Bulis and Dipendra Kunwar fashioned the winner in the 81st minute, Bulis providing the cross and Kunwar scoring with an audacious scissors-kick.

After a goalless opening half, Tilford Zebras downed University through goals by Fabian Lapolla in the 55th minute and Henry Fagg in the 70th.

Zebras were without Paul Cairns, Ryan Smith and keeper Troy Kaden, but were still too strong for the Students.

Metro thumped Christian United 13-0 in their Division One match at Sherburd Park today.

Scottish import Ricky Orr scored seven goals and Wade Hawkins four, while Wayne Jackson and Scottish import Grant Malcolm netted a goal apiece for Metro, who led 4-0 at the interval.

Northern Suburbs DOSA beat Hobart United 5-2 at the Showground after being 1-1 at half-time.

Scott Maccrum hit a hat-trick for DOSA, with Stephen Swift and John Visentin grabbing the other goals.

Gay Mu and Allessandro Bellini netted for United.

In the Premier League reserves, South Hobart downed New Town Eagles 5-1 and Zebras defeated University 4-0.

In the Under-19s, University were held to a 2-2 draw by Zebras, while South Hobart overcame New Town Eagles 5-0.

Hobart Olympic moved up a place to sixth on the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League ladder as a result of this 2-1 win over fourth-placed Glenorchy Knights.

Corey Smith watched the game from the stand, while Alex Holmes, formerly with Taroona and South Hobart, took his place at the back for the Knights.

Olympic were first into attack and Chris Tsakiris’s excellent volley after just 4 minutes tested the reflexes of Ben Peter.

In the 7th minute, Danijel Djekanovic’s cross from the left was headed out by Anthony Grundy, but only to Chris Tsakiris, who again worked Peter, the goalkeeper this time tipping the shot over the bar for what was to prove a decisive corner.

Chris Tsakiris floated the corner in from the right and Adam Hedge flicked it on for the unmarked Carl Larzabal to prod home from 8 metres and give Olympic the lead.

Within seconds of the re-start, Amadu Koroma curled a nice shot in from the right, forcing Olympic’s keeper, Dmitri Nester, to dive to his right and turn the ball just around the far left-hand post.

Olympic did not deal very well with the corner and Koroma gained possession on the right, from where he lobbed in a high ball which Nester just collected from under the crossbar.

In the 11th minute, Olympic forced two corners in quick succession, Peter again having to be alert and at his best.

Two minutes later, Jade Clay fired in a long-range effort from the right, but it was straight at Nester.

In the 14th minute, Djekanovic beat Holmes on the left and cut the ball inside to Adam Hedge, who drove his shot wide.

Robert Lebski was unlucky for Olympic in the 17th minute when he beat Clay on the left and cut inside, only to see his shot come back off the near post.

On the half-hour mark, Knights were awarded an indirect free-kick on the corner of the six-yard box on the left after Nester handled a back-pass. Fielding drove the free-kick high and wide, with the goal beckoning.

James Hope replaced Nektar Vavoulas 9 minutes before the interval as coach Eammon Kelly made a tactical switch to add firepower up front.

It worked almost immediately as Hope equalised in the 42nd minute.

Fielding put Koroma away down the inside-right channel, Peter Tsakiris being unable to cut out the pass.

Koroma outwitted Youssef Mohamad and, with the on-rushing Nester stranded, Koroma cleverly squared the ball to Hope, who netted despite Paul Kaproulias getting back into the goalmouth.

Olympic squandered a great opportunity to regain the lead in the 54th minute when Djekanovic headed Larzabal’s cross from the right tamely over the bar.

Knights responded with a chance of their own in the 57th minute, Koroma flicking on Clay’s corner for Holmes to head over the bar.

Knights came close to scoring on the hour when Clay’s right-wing cross was chested down by Will Roberts, the ball falling to Koroma, whose over-head kick cleared the bar.

Knights were looking very dangerous at this stage and, in the 66th minute, Jackson Marsh’s diagonal ball from left to right found Hope inside the box. He beat substitute Chris Tsimiklis, made an angle for a shot, but fired into the side-netting.

Olympic then made two substitutions. In the 67th minute, the injured Matthew Hedge was replaced by Dipendra Kunwar, while in the 70th minute, Michael Bulis came on for Asdam Hedge.

In between these substitutions, the Knights almost scored, but Clay’s right-wing cross struck the far post and rebounded into play.

In the 71st minute, Fielding lost possession in midfield and Larzabal’s excellent pass put Bulis away, but a timely intervention by Clay saved the day for the Knights.

The two substitutes were certainly having an impact and, in the 74th minute, Peter did well to deny Kunwar from close range.

But, 9 minutes from the end, the two substitutes combined to score an excellent winner.

Lebski released Bulis down the left and, although Anthony Grundy got in a tackle inside the left-hand side of the box, the ball rebounded to Bulis, who chipped it into the centre for Kunwar to throw himself into the air and scissor-kick the ball inside the far post.

Kelly replaced Koroma with Kamba 6 minutes from the end, but Olympic held out comfortably for the win.

Lee Mason was excellent in midfield for Olympic, rarely wasting possession and driving his side forward with astute passes to team-mates over short and long distances.

  • Glenorchy Knights coach, Eamonn Kelly, said:

“I thought it was a good game of football.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t contribute to the second forty-five minutes.

“We let them in with the second goal.

“That was the difference between us. Two people were told to do a job when Bulis came on and when little Dippa came on.

“We let him in. We didn’t do our job. It’s as simples as that. It’s the end of the game.”

  • Hobart Olympic coach, Farrell Shaw, said:

“It was a pretty open game, with a lot of end-to-end stuff.

“The Knights finished the first half a lot better than we did. Unlucky on a couple of occasions not to score.

“I think I always had Michael Bulis and Dipendra Kunwar on the bench. Fortunately, Michael passed his fitness test, and Dipendra came in with a cold.

“We always had the pace, so we were always a threat.

“We threw them on and it just worked out in the end.

“The lads dug deep. We’re slowly improving and that’s all we can do from week to week now.”

Hobart Olympic started the better but were not able to convert that superiority into goals.

They created several half-chances without ever seriously threatening.

Emmanuel Tsakiris and Colin Banks were lively, as was Hugh Richardson, but the final pass was always astray and played into the hands of the Knights defenders.

Alex Tatnell had a good game in goal for the Knights. He was alert to through balls and was able to cut out any danger with astute interceptions.

He made several important saves, particularly against Tsakiris.

Chris Tsimiklis was busy at the heart of the Olympic defence but still found time to launch attacks.

Cosmos Paite is obviously not fully fit. He created some openings for the Knights but his choice of pass was not always correct.

In the first half, for example, he chose to shoot tamely on one occasion when Andrew Robb was on his own and running through the middle.

It was Paite’s shot, however, which enabled Robbie Bolonja to put the Knights ahead in the 58th minute with a deft touch.

Shane Kent made it 2-0 in the 71st minute when Stratos Plomaritis could only parry Bolonja’s shot.

Tsakiris pulled a goal back a minute later with a low drive from close range that gave Tatnell no chance.

Bolonja restored the two-goal buffer in the 74th minute when he turned in Robb’s shot.

Olympic had one more chance before the end when Peter Otto set up Tsakiris, but he fired straight at Tatnell.

The win lifted the Knights to the top of the ladder with 13 points, one ahead of Tilford Zebras, who are in action against University on Saturday.

  • Glenorchy Knights coach, Nick Harrison, said:

“Two different teams, really.

“First half, weren’t in it and kept giving the ball away.

“They started the better team. They came out of the blocks quicker than us, but as the first half wore on, I thought we got back into it.

“Second half, we came back out and did what we said we would in the change rooms and thoroughly deserved it.

“Pretty disappointed with the goal we gave away.

“Thoroughly deserved and put the pressure on now for next week against Zebras.”

  • Hobart Olympic coach, Tony Tarros, said:

“First half, we were all over them but didn’t put our chances away.

“We had a lot more opportunities in the opening half.

“A few injuries in the second half took it away from us.”
