Olympia Warriors drew 2-2 with traditional rivals Hobart Zebras in an NPL Tasmania pre-season friendly at Warrior Park today.

The Warriors took the lead in the opening minutes through Joffrey N’Koso.

Midway through the half, Jack Ryan made it 2-0 with a penalty.

Lachie Burt pulled a goal back for Zebras before the interval, while Matthew Pace almost levelled when his bullet-like shot struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced down and then back into play.

There were claims it had crossed the line, but the assistant referee did not flag and the referee waved play on.

Pace equalised in the second half and Zebras could have won the game in the closing minutes but the Olympia keeper saved in a one-on-one situation.

Zebras had two new players on view.  One was a Japanese defender from the Gold Coast and the other an attacker from Box Hill.

Neither has finalised a move to Tasmania and their signing with Zebras is still up in the air.

“It was similar to last week,” said Olympia Warriors coach, Rob Clarke.  “We’re talking about minutes and a lot of changes.

“We changed the system today just to play something different and that was good for us.

“I think it’s like costs and benefits.  When we had the ball going forward, we had a spare man, but when we didn’t have the ball, they had a spare man.

“I like the two strikers.  That’s what we’re going to try and work on a bit this year.  Whether we play three at the back or four at the back or whatever we’re going to do, we’ll try and work with two strikers.”

Hobart Zebras coach, David Smith, said:  “I was quite happy in principle.  We conceded a couple of soft goals.

“The first half is really the only half we really cared about.  We go through the motions when we make changes.  The first half, I thought we opened them up a little bit.

“We were poor defensively, especially on the left-hand side.  We just gave the ball away too much.

“To be fair, I was more than happy with what we got.  We created some things in the front-third, which I was really happy about.

“We need to be a little more careful when we force things, but that’ll come with practice.

“I’m reasonably happy at this stage of the season going forward.

“Defensively, we can play, but we dropped off too deep and we didn’t pick up the runner, or we didn’t close down the runner.

“In principle, a great little warm up for us at this stage of the year.”

In another pre-season friendly at KGV Park, South Hobart’s NPL side beat Southern Championship outfit Beachside 5-0.

Kyle Vincent netted twice, while Bradley Lakoseljac, Connor Schmidt and Alex Walter each scored once.

David Smith, the new coach of Hobart Zebras, said he is pleased with the way his squad is progressing.

Zebras beat Taroona 3-0 in a pre-season friendly last Thursday.

Henry Fagg is back training with Zebras, while Beachside team-mate Adam Lapolla is also training with Zebras, as is youngster Luca Frarraccio.

Zebras have signed former Northern Rangers goalkeeper Sam Whatman, but keeper Jake French is rumoured to be training with Clarence United.

Zebras striker Adam McKeown is recovering well after his Achilles tendon operation last season and he played for a short time against Taroona last week.

Striker Mathew Sanders will fly in from Melbourne for Saturday’s hit-out against Olympia.

Meanwhile, South Hobart are trying to arrange a pre-season friendly against champions Devonport City.

Both teams are happy to travel so a venue has yet to be decided.

Devonport have regained the services of Daniel Syson, who has rejoined the club after a stint with Launceston City.

And, they have signed Connor Parke, a Burnie boy, who has been playing in Queensland with NPL club Grange Thistle.

Youngster Kynan West has also decided to commit to Devonport after being torn between soccer and Australian Rules.

The coaches' verdict

Photo:  Olympia's new coach, Rob Clarke, watches the game [PlessPix]

Olympia coach Rob Clarke said:

“It was really only about minutes today so I’m happy that, number one, we didn’t get any injuries, and that we got 60 minutes into the core group, really.

“In the first half probably, when we had seven or eight of our possible starting eleven on, I’m pretty happy with some of the stuff.

“But, we really haven’t had the chance to work with the first eleven as a unit.  There’s work and there are other commitments.  It’s the same for all the other teams.  So, you’ve just got to make the best of it.

“I was happy for [James] Ross.  We didn’t have a keeper today so for young Ross, at just 15, to step up, that was great.

South Hobart coach Ken Morton said:

“It was a good run out for us.  The major aim was to get 45 minutes or an hour into the legs of the top players, the senior squad players, and then, in these types of games, obviously to blood a few youngsters we think are in with a chance of being in and around the squad.

“I think overall it was a good performance.  A little bit untidy in the first half in terms of possession.

“But, it’ll come and I thought it was a good workout for us.

“Ben [Hamlett] looked good.  That was probably enough for him, 45 minutes.  Probably next Saturday a little bit more, and a bit more in the next two games coming up before the break.  We’ll get him close."
