Division One sides realised there is a considerable gulf between them and the Premier League after the weekend's series of friendlies.
Clarence United beat Beachside 4-1 in the seniors today, while in the reserves, Clarence were victorious 3-1.
Kingborough Lions United overcame Metro 4-2.
In the reserves, the Lions won 3-1.
The Kingborough senior line-up was: Voss - Palmer, Kerr, D Pearce, Wells - Bevan, Andrews, White, Schuth - Freeman, McDonald.
White, Freeman, McDonald and Schuth were the scorers for Kingborough, while Kye McQueen netted both of Metro's goals.
Damien Pearce, who once played for South Hobart, was in the centre of defence with Kerr.
Missing were Marc Iseli (work/study), Marcello Marchioli (cruise) and Ross Hinkley (infected foot).
The Metro squad was: Land, Chaffey, Rahni, Herring, Gasparin, Dawes, Powell, Farley, Bingham, Brown, McQueen.
"It was a pretty good first hit-out and the game was played in very good spirits and I think both teams would've been happy for the run," said Metro coach, Darrin Chaffey.
"I was pleased with the way we played and if we can continue on the good habits that were employed, Metro have a lot to look forward too.
"It's great to see Mohand Rahni returnt o training in mid-week and still in the Metro colours.
"James Hope, Jim Brown, Aaron Marney, Edward Guma and Phil Curran are still unavailable because of injury or cricket commitments."

ReplyDeletesouth are a zippy team of decent ball players. they are definitely short at the back, centre halves and their keepers are the weak links in the team.
ReplyDeletewas very surprised at the oakleigh reslut, and not so much in the South result.
They dont have the bodies to compete at that level of football.
Some very good young players for the future in there though.

ReplyDeletenow now anonymus,if souths keepers are the weakest link they are in pretty good shape,based on the results their keepers dont stack up too badly compared to the other keepers in the league.even nathan pitchford who is a definite talent and deserves every bit of encouragement we can give copped a fair bit of harsh criticism from some quarters.

ReplyDeletefair play that keepers are at the peril of their midfields and defences, but a spade is a spade -
as it is, Sam isn't a bad keeper by any stretch, but not a gd one either - best to say he can do the job with that squad in front of him
as for pitchy, he only cops criticism when he cops goals...which tends to be the way it pans out etc...
anyway, the main point was that south's youngsters definitely play good football, but looking through the squad they are definitely weakest through the centre of defence and in goal.
Souths keepers are good enough to do the job yeah, but both don't have save hands, or are very strong in the air. Moncur is a good shot stopper, and Sam is a bit slow i think. Pitchy is talented yeah, but is hot and cold, Fantastic one week can't get one past, shocking the next and with balls fumbling through his legs etc. Good keepers are conisitant, yeah the odd mess up but always on their game. Bubbles great exsample.

ReplyDeletecentre halves are the weak links in the team - doesn't mean they aren't good players, and would play in most sides, but are the weak links in souths team -

ReplyDeleteit is hard to call a minimum goals conceded as many leagues played more or less games. ie many years 20 plus games were played!
But i think you will find it hard to beat (atleast in modern times) universities record in 2001, conceding only 10 goals in 18games.
Zebras in 2004 follow with 11 conceded.
either way south hob of the last 2 years have only conceded 13 in each season. impressive.
It's got to be University in 2001, with 10 goals conceded in 18 matches.

ReplyDeleteCant read much into South's result vs South Melbourne, realistically there would be at least a 5 goal difference any day of the week between South M and the best team from here.

As much as i dont like them either what a great effort to organise the trip, im sure the players will always remember it for good reasons.
story goes that the melb trip was nothing more than last years end of season players trip postponed due to players rep commitments.

how many goals conceeded in the season is not always a reflection on the quality of the keeper, or even the defence for that matter, more on the quality of the team in whole. no questioning the quality of the side as a whole but certainley not a side that is solid in defence.
ReplyDeletelol anonymus,i think i can say i am not biased.yes sam is my son and i know jow hard he has worked to be the best he can be ever since he put boots on for the first time.does not mean he is the best around.i love to see all restrictions removed and see the best players available competing at top level.if that that means having two teams of the same club in the premier league so be it.its not hard to regulate and stop switching from one team to another but if south hobart or new towneagles aregood enough to play at top level so be it
ReplyDeletein an ideal scenario i would love to see every club with a growing membership base and being able to cater for anyone who wants to play regardles of what level they are at.the fft is not responsible for the quality of the footbal played the clubs are.fft is responsible for promoting the game allthough the clubs can do a lot more too in that area.why don the clubs hang notices in their areas local shops to advertise their games,why does the fft not even make the effort to advertise its top games in the paper and the times, half the time walter is the only one who gives any relevant information.apart from the south hobart and grove road grounds our grounds are not paricularly spectator friendly.for our sport to grow we must get bodies on the park to play and bums on seats to come and watch.if the fft is going to keep going along the same miserable promotion path as they have been doing for years then no matter what nothing will really change.a prime example was devonport last year,they play in two statewide finals and the devonport people never got a chance to see their team play,that is just plain idiocy.fft must accomodate the sport statewide not just mainly cater for people down south.ok that was my bitching session sorry walter
