Huon Valley tried as hard as they could, but they were never in the hunt against a young and fit Metro outfit.

The heat and the humid playing conditions did not help Huon Valley, and neither did the dismissal of Ian Martin 6 minutes before the interval.

Martin deliberately handled a cross and conceded a penalty, whereupon Mr Ambler showed him the red card, meaning that the Valley had to play more than half the match with just 10 players.

Jason Dawes tucked away the spot kick and Metro led 2-0, the skilful youngster Ryan Thurley having given them the lead in the 20th minute with a fine, low shot from 20 metres.

Aaron Marney added the third in the 27th minute, while Dawes grabbed his second of the game on the half-hour mark, sliding in to sweep the ball into the net.

Two minutes after the resumption, Dawes completed his hat-trick by netting Metro’s fifth goal, while Marney made it 6-0 two minutes later.

Ten minutes into the second period, Dawes took his personal tally to four goals as Huon Valley wilted in the sweltering conditions.

Dawes was fouled in the 50th minute for the second penalty of the match, which was converted by Marney to complete his hat-trick and take the score-line to 8-0.

A minute from the end, Joel Richardson found the net to complete the scoring, but Dawes went down injured as the game ended seconds later.

He was suffering from concussion and could not walk. Rather than move him from the ground - he had tried to stand up but was clearly unsteady on his feet - an ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital.

The win meant that Metro finished top of Group B and will meet Hobart United in the semi-finals of the Division One Summer Cup competition.

  1. Huon was simply outclassed. Although one of Metro's "saviours" looked like rubbish today if he couldnt score past that defence today how will he go against a defence who has a bit of ability.

  2. so he had an off day, so what every one does and when he did the rest of the team picked up the load on the score sheet. He'll be back next week I bet

  7. Walter, I'm currently re-designing the Taroona fc website and was wondering if i would be able to use some of of your match photos in the gallery? I also remember an older post which had many photos of the earlier teams and club identities. If i could have access to those as well it would go a long way in helping us maintain an archive of our clubs history :) I have provided a link to your blog if thats ok? Hope to have it up in the next few days!

    cheers, Llewyn

  8. Hi Llewyn

Yes, you may do that as long as you acknowledge the source of the photos. And yes, a link would be nice.

Sorry I didn't name you in the photos from the game against Clarence. I'll fix that.

    Cheers!

  13. Hmmm... that Huon Valley team looks very similar to the one that played Div 4 last season. However they are missing one or two players of premier standard.

  15. I'm not sure you can be throwing the to old comment around fan, gasparin and chaffey are a combined age of 100.

  16. anon 8:15pm yes your comment may be true but id hate to see what you think of the age of beachside combined.

  17. Those beachside blokes can play though.

  20. no doubt Beachside older players can play..but can they last the whole season? they've started playing friendlies in December..Div 1 ends in September..long way to go and this year with 8 teams there are no byes..so no rest for those sore legs.
Metro got a couple of old players and so have all other Div 1 teams..
Beachside relies on their older players performances more than any other team..
but good luck to them..should be a close contest though with teams like United, Nelson and Uni very capable of taking points of the top 2 teams.

  21. Good point about being able to last the season fan, it is a long one. I think B/side have decent senior depth, their reserves have won the past 3 titles in a row, so quality shouldn't be a problem for div 1. Metros biggest weapon is nth chigwell, not many teams go up there and come away with points. Hobart utd will most likely implode, they fight between themselves when the going gets tough. Proud will need to carry uni if they are to compete and nelson won't figure, not coached well enough.

he was actually asked to play for Knights U19's this year. he was called and asked. He decided to stay and play for Metro. Think what you will.

  24. metro continue to blow their own trumpet but if they are lucky enough to make prem will end up losing every game 20-0

  25. anon @ 9am
in saying that do you also believe that beachside could or would do much better if they make premierleague?

    Don't count your chickens.
Didn't Metro lose to Hob United in their last game in 2009?

only a select few from metro believe that all games this year will be easy, those that have played before realise how hard teams like beachside and hobart united can be to play at any time in the year. Besides that Rhodesy is using the summer cup as most of our pre season friendly's to fine tune the team and our playing style, if we win, then its all well and good, if we lose well we'll keep at it all year, pre season cups generally mean nothing as players are played in spots they normally aren't etc
