Taroona's fate may be sealed this Saturday

The relegation issue may be decided on Saturday when the second-last round of matches in the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League are played.

Bottom-side Taroona will go down if they lose to third-last Kingborough Lions United at KGV Park at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Even if Taroona win, they will probably still be relegated if second-last Olympia Warriors manage a win against third-ranked Glenorchy Knights at South Hobart on Saturday afternoon.

If Taroona beat the Lions and if Olympia lose to the Knights, it will come down to the last round of matches, but Taroona’s inferior goal-difference is the albatross around their necks.

The Lions have not performed at their best in recent weeks and so Taroona do have a chance of winning, but their fate is also in the hands of others.

Glenorchy Knights will probably still be without Josh Fielding for the match against Olympia and they will have to do better than they did against Tilford Zebras in the previous outing if they are to win against an Olympia side that is fighting its life in the Premier League.

“It’s a big game for us because we can still finish second and get a home game in the finals series, and that’s what we’re going for,” said Knights coach, Nick Harrison.

“Obviously, it’ll be hard against Olympic because a win for them will guarantee them of Premier League next season.

“We play Taroona next week, but it could all be over by then.

“We should have the same side as last week.”

The battle for fourth spot continues on Saturday night at Wentworth Park when fourth-plac ed Clarence United host champions South Hobart.

It’s a game Clarence must win to stay ahead of fifth-placed New Town Eagles, who are in action at home at Clare Street on Sunday against second-placed Tilford Zebras.

South Hobart will not be taking things easy as they wish to maintain their unbeaten record this season.

They will again be without Daniel Brown but will field close to their strongest line-up.

New Town Eagles will miss the injured Alex Leszczynski against Zebras, but the visitors will need to be better than they were in their recent 1-0 win over Glenorchy Knights if they are to come away with the three points.

Eagles can sniff fourth place and will be fired up, but their fervour may be dampened somewhat if Clarence have beaten South Hobart the previous evening.

  1. Olympia to beat relegation this weekend, despite Taroona probably getting over Kingborough. Knights look to weak.

  5. I think the olympia president is counting his chickens a little too early (as he is prone to do). Olympia can't rely on incorrect refereeing decisions to get them over the line each week, regardless of how little the president knows about the rules.

  8. 50% of teams think that 50% of decisions are wrong 50% of the time.

Leave the poor refs out of it.

Poor referees have themselves to blame! Why should everyone put up with their inconsistant calls!
Yes everyone makes a mistakes now and then! But people are not complaining about that!
Its the lack of consistancy and obvious poor calls from some referees that is not accecptable! Especially at the top level!

  15. Anonymous 4.56pm There is an old saying - "Put up or shut up" . If refereeing is so easy why dont you get off your butt and put a whistle in your mouth and give it a try!!!!!

  16. Olympia 2 knights 1.. Olympia's young guns are too quick and skillful, Ben Phillips will dominate tommorrow as he has done in recent weeks, with Cronk up front who is yet to show his full patential. Olympia are peaking at the right time. Taroona on the other hand are history, taroona 1 king 2.

  17. Will be interesting to see if the roona boys stay or leave? Some great young talent there. Will South be able to hold onto there reserves which most would push for first team positions else. I can see Seth Otte being a comanding figure whereever he finds himself next year. Kingborough need to strengthen as I think they will be the weakest link come next year. Abbot and Atkinson to Kingborough!

  18. Otte needs to look at his future, there is not much point in staying with south, he's now old enough and good enough to be playing seniors in a new up and coming club such as Olympia. Staying in reserves at south won't do him much good.

  21. Ben Phillips,a bit of advise, stop your dad from writing on here, he is not doing you any favours. In fact it would be good if you could keep him away from games too.

  26. Taroona live on! borough had no answers. so much for smashing roona and proving who should be in div 1.

  27. garth scored the winner... enough said!!! also otte would not go to olympia as he would rather play reserves premier then in div 1!!!! referees are people who want power because they got bullied at school!!!

  28. Anonymous at 7.11pm you are obviously a referee and no doubt you could be one of the poor variety!Stop making excuses for poor and inconsistent work! If you put the whistle to your lips and blew it I'm sure sound would come from your butt where head is obviously placed!! Get real this is the Premier League! Is it to much to expect some consistency!!!
The league would be much better for it and less people would get frustrated! Oh I have refereed before!
