South Hobart have signed defender Luke Huigsloot from Clarence United.

Huigsloot is expected to make his debut on Saturday in the friendly against Beachside and then also play in the opening round of the Steve Hudson Cup in Launceston on the Sunday.

“This is a massive signing for us,” said South Hobart coach, Ken Morton.

“He’s a dynamic young player and we think he’ll be a big acquisition to us.

“Hopefully, we’ll bring something to his game, and he’ll certainly bring something to our game.”

South Hobart beat Taroona 4-1 in a friendly this evening at Wellesley Park.

Jonathon Lo and Jim Pennicott each scored a brace, while Felix Kanga replied for Taroona with a penalty.

“The game was good in patches,” said South Hobart coach, Ken Morton. “But, at other times it was scrappy.

"It was another good work-out for us. It wasn’t a full side for us, but still a good side.

“They worked hard. The young lads fought hard for each other. Not a bad work-out.

“The first 20 minutes we blitzed them off the park. We scored after just four minutes and the game could have been over.

“But, we fall into the habit of dropping into their ways a little bit. But, a good work-out. We’ve had good numbers at training but we didn’t play a lot of players tonight.”

“Taroona worked the ball well and maintained discipline and tried to play out from the back. It was refreshing.”

  1. Why doesn't Kenny play any of his players from his world clarsh soccer school instead of signing players from elsewhere?

  7. Ken Morton still continues to work to raise standards even with comments from Craig and others which continues to amaze me.

Andy Brenan, Jim Pennicott and Hugo Bladell all part of the world class soccer school. Plus watch the development squad to see how first class the school is.

  9. Everything's world class in Tasmania, it's just the world that asks who, what, where, when?

  10. Clarence have still got some players to come in. They have players to step up from reserves but that will leave gaps to fill from there. They will be better than people expect even with losing alot of quality. Togsy is up and about .

  11. Clarenec had a lot of depth in 2010(albeit very few stars)and that will definitely help with the churn in 2011.

Wonder who will squeezed out of South's defence to accomodate Huigy? Maybe Dogga to defensive midfield or Jim Pennicott to the forward line - he can't stop scoring at the moment.

  12. Luke Huigsloot is not a defender.

  13. Clarence would not have a problem now if they had addressed the exudes of players & volunteers over the last 2-3 years

I assume that is a veiled criticism from Ken about the style of play of some of the other teams South have come up against.

  19. Huigy isn't a defender never played there once with Clarence . Would be good there with his size and pace . Don't think he would enjoy it as he runs around like a headless chicken

  20. I recall Luke playing CB for CU at Clare St in 2010 and the outcome is probably why noone has seen him play there since - decent midfielder tho.

  21. sounds like there's a few on here that dont rate Huigy that highly but presumably Ken Morton's seen something worthwhile in the boy.

Having said that South's midfield needs a holding player like Bart Beecroft or Gary Upton so has Luke got the discipline to fill that need?

  22. All Morton has done is sign him. Ken would sign 50 new players if they turned up. Not a holding midfielder. More of an middle of the park enforcer and combative threat going forward especially in the air. Doubt he would suit a patient style of player but would fit the mould of a Gary upton.

  27. Luke huigsloot is possibly the best player in the entire world. anyone who mouths off about him will be dealt with. He has recently been called up to the dutch national side because he is so big and dutch and awesome. he will be the best player south have ever witnessed. you can take that to the bank

  28. The funny thing is, even though Clarence have lost alot players from their senior and reserves list from 2010. (4 have gone to play with another SPL side, one has moved to Launceston for Uni and signed with Rangers, and the rest are *playing in the USA, *playing football or just giving soccer up all together.) They will still finish in the top 4 this season. Yes they have lost a few but believe me, they have picked up a few too.

Beware the wounded bull people, mock and put down Clarence as much as want. you WILL regret thinking they are a spent force.

The Phoenix will always rise stronger from the ashes.

    Love, Clarence Supporter.

  29. Ken Morton is SOOOOOO pretentious. With comments like "we fall into the habit of dropping into their ways a little bit." At least Taroona didnt do the same and fall in love with themselves!!
