Northern Rangers open up 4-point gap at the top in the North

Northern Rangers opened up a 4-point lead over second-placed Devonport City and third-ranked Prospect Knights at the head of the Forestry Tasmania Northern Premier League competition this afternoon after downing seventh-placed Burnie United 3-0 at home at the NTCA Ground.

A strike by Michael Townsend and a penalty by Todd Hingston gave Rangers a 2-0 lead at the interval.

Townsend netted his second goal after the break to seal the 3-0 victory.

“There’s still a long way to go,” said a cautious Rangers coach, Roslan Saad after the match.

Devonport lost for the second time this season to Prospect Knights, going down 2-1 away at Harley Parade.

Matthew Sesay put the Knights ahead after 20 minutes, while Chris Pickering made it 2-0 in the 70th minute.

Devonport pulled back a late goal through a Chris McKenna penalty after he was brought down, but City could not manage an equaliser.

“I’ve just been for a walk to try and calm down,” said a relieved Knights coach, Dane Hudson, shortly after the final whistle.

Riverside Olympic led bottom-side Launceston United 2-0 at the break at Birch Avenue before piling on four more goals in the second half.

Will Guy weighed in with two goals, while Aaron Campbell, Ethan Olner, Simon Napier and Steve Gulbrandson also found the net for the visitors.

Robert Murray netted United’s consolation goal.

A superb volley from 18 metres on the hour by Tom Roach gave Somerset its 1-0 away win over Ulverstone at the Ulverstone Showgrounds.
