New Town Eagles and Clarence United drew 2-2 in their Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League match at Clare Street today.
The point put second-last Eagles five points ahead of bottom-side University, while Clarence are fifth.
Eagles hit the front after only three minutes when captain and central-defender Chris Wass headed home Ben Whitehall’s corner.
The league’s leading marksman, Luke Cripps, netted his 23rd goal in the league this season when he equalised on the half-hour from Sam McIntyre’s cross.
Eagles netted their second a minute from the interval when Clarence keeper Michael Moschogianis turned a Wass shot against the far post and Jacob Malakoff forced the ball over the line from close range at the second attempt after Moschogianis had blocked his first effort.
Cripps equalised for the second time in the 52nd minute when his free-kick from 20 metres beat Eagles keeper Michael Soszynski at his right-hand post.
Clarence captain and defender Ben Parker was fortunate when he deflected an Eagles cross against his own post near the end, Malakoff prodding the rebound just wide and forcing a fruitless corner.
In Division One, second-placed Taroona beat last-placed Hobart United 4-0 at home at Kelevdon Park.
Marcus Atkinson netted twice and Jack Elliott and Hamish Macgregor once each as Taroona collected the three points with ease to stay three points behind leader Metro.
