One of the stars of Tasmanian football in the 1950s and 1960s, Hugh Robertson, passed away in Hobart this week.

Robertson, one of the finest players of his generation, was aged 67 and died of cancer.

I used to watch Robertson when I was a child and as a teenager and admired him greatly.

He was a left-winger for Caledonians and later Olympia.

Robertson was tall, slim, athletic and fast and was one of the fairest players in the game.

He was one of the first players in Tasmania to wear Adidas boots. I still remember the distinctive black boots with the three white stripes and the blue linings.

Robertson represented Southern Tasmania, and he played for Tasmania against Chelsea at North Hobart in 1965.

It is such a shame to lose a person of such football talent. Our condolences go out to his family.

Does anyone know if we have a hall of fame or something similar like a soccer history museum for our local soccer greats of yesterday.

Do you know if these local legends ever get invited to major events as a way of linking the old to the younger generation which soccer in other countries do so well.

I recall Hugh playing for Calies and Olympia .

I also recall him playing for Hobart High School in a featured match at S Hobart .

A true gentleman both on and off the field

Thank you Walter for these good words about Hugh from those good days. We were adoring little sisters watching him streak down that left wing, with the goal in his sights. So fast, so able.
