Glory second on goal-difference after win over Wellington

Perth Glory 2-1 Wellington Phoenix

Perth Glory moved level on 11 points with A-League leaders Adelaide United when they beat Wellington Phoenix 2-1 at home at NIB Stadium in Perth this afternoon before a crowd of 10,844.

Glory has an inferior goal-difference and is second on the ladder, while Phoneix are eighth.

Perth opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a beautifully worked goal from a counter-attack. Robbie Fowler played a delightful pass from midfield to Todd Howarth wide on the left and he squared the ball across the box for Mile Sterjovski to drive home.

Fowler made it 2-0 in the 61st minute when he eluded Tony Lochhead down the right of the box and nodded home Sterjovski’s left-wing cross to the far post.

Ben Sigmund pulled a goal back for Wellington in the 72nd minute when he headed home Paul Ifill’s corner from the left.

Anthony Skorich almost grabbed a third for the home side, but Wellington keeper Mark Paston saved well.

At the other end, Perth keeper Tando Velaphi also did well to deny Chris Greenacre when a goal appeared certain.
