Key games in Men's Southern Championship on the menu this weekend

Photo:  South East United coach Glen Roland comes off with his South East United players at half time.  I was intrigued by the sponsor's name on the team's shirts:  Galifrae Fishing.  I asked Glen whether that was the same name as a cray fishing boat I have photographed in Tasmanian waters and he said that it was.  The cray boat's owners sponsor South East United. Hobart United beat Metro 5-4 with a last-minute goal at North Chigwell on Tuesday night to move to within one point of Men’s Southern Championship leaders New Town White Eagles.

The match was a catch-up game after the game between the sides on 19 June was abandoned after just 18 minutes when a Metro player suffered a badly broken leg.

Eagles face a difficult away game against third-ranked University at Olinda Grove at 2.15pm tomorrow and anything but a win could cost them the leadership.

Hobart United won’t have an easy task, either, as they are away to fourth-placed South Hobart at South Hobart Oval tomorrow at 11.45am.

This will be a fascinating round as all the top sides play each other.

Sixth-placed Taroona host fifth-ranked Olympia Warriors at 2.15pm at Kelvedon Park and home-ground advantage may be decisive.

Seventh-placed Beachside welcome a resurgent Metro to Sandown Park at 2.15pm and the visitors seem to have discovered their mojo and will give this a red-hot go.

Glenorchy Knights did well to hold leaders Eagles to a 2-2 draw last week and may just grab all 3 points away to Kingborough Lions United at Lightwood Park at 4.15pm tomorrow.

In a bottom-of-the-table clash at Wentworth Park at 2.15pm tomorrow, second-last Clarence Zebras meet bottom-side South East United.

A win for the visitors would see then leapfrog their hosts to swap places on the ladder.
