The 2024 Men’s and Women’s Summer Cup Finals will be played at Lightwood Park this year on Saturday, 9 March.

Kingborough Lions United have issued a statement that said the progress of major developments at Lightwood Park is progressing well since work started in August 2021..

The new facilities include eight state-of-the-art new changerooms, the installation of lights with a capacity of 500 lux, and the renovation of Clennett’s Lightwood Park (the main pitch), to meet minimum FIFA requirements.

“We have been in construction mode for around two-and-a-half years, which has been testing at times in relation to ground availability and disrupted access for our members,” Kingborough Lions United club president, Brian Downes, said:

“However, we are very pleased with the progress we have made to date, and our amazing new facilities.

“We would not have achieved any of our development without the amazing support of the Tasmanian State Government, particularly Sports Minister Nic Street, and the Australian Government’s tremendous support through the Hon Julie Collins MP, Member for Franklin.

“I also want to acknowledge the assistance we have received from Kingborough Council and Football Tasmania.”

The Australian Government has contributed $3,030,000 through its “Investing in Our Communities” program.

The State Government has contributed over $3 million, with the Kingston Council contributing over $200,000 towards stage 1 of the project.

The visit to Hobart last Thursday of journalist Ted Simmons was a success in terms of promoting his new book, “Australian Soccer:  From the beginning.”

It took Ted 17 years to write the book and it deals with men’s and women’s soccer in equal measure.

The WSL Summer Cup continues tomorrow with a game between Glenorchy Knights and South Hobart at KGV Park at 6.30pm.

Thankfully, it will be much cooler tomorrow than it has been for the past two days.
