South Hobart sent out a warning to the other Tasmanian NPL teams today by beating the visiting Pascoe Vale 3-0 at South Hobart Oval.
The visiting Victorian play in Victoria’s NPL 2 competition.
South Hobart’s new senior NPL coach, Max Clarke, has worked in Victoria for a few years until returning to Tasmania recently and this may have helped him prepare his team for this game.
He would have had the intelligence on Pascoe Vale and his team obviously had their measure.

South Hobart’s Women’s Super League side thrashed the visiting Geelong Galaxy 9-0 at South Hobart Oval today.
That made for an auspicious start for their new coach, Ken Morton, who stepped down as the club’s NPL coach at the end of last season.
Glenorchy Knights got a commendable result today in their NPL hit-out against Riverside Olympic at KGV Park, winning 6-2.
In the Under-21 clash between the sides, Glenorchy Knights beat Riverside Olympic 5-1.
Clarence Zebras’ NPL side lost 3-1 to the visiting Brunswick Juventus at KGV Park.
The game was goalless at half-time.
Brunswick took the lead shortly after the resumption but Clarence Zebras were level shortly after.

Two more goals by the visitors proved too much for Clarence Zebras to handle.
Incidentally, Clarence Zebras beat Launceston United 5-2 away last weekend which was a sort of revenge for United NPL win over Clarence Zebras last season.
Kingborough Lions United downed Southern Championship side Taroona 5-1.

Top notch to have you back Walt! Looking forward to your coverage this season!
Hi Walter. If Pascoe Vale are NPL 2 level isn’t that the third tier behind NPl1 and NPL as the main league ?
$outh are always going to put out warnings with the squads they have purchased.
You clearly know nothing about football in Tasmania if you think South are cashed up lol
South have paid players for years. Maybe not always in cash but certainly in kind.
Here we go again. Another year of angry old men shouting at the sky about which clubs pay players and how much. The comments here are nothing if not predictable.
South might’ve recruited all of Hobart but Zebras put out a Sunday league team. I hope they have more players coming in between now and March
So a Hundred dollar fuel card or food voucher doesn't count.
Keep dreaming
Agree. It is so sad to think, that these guys have been waiting for Walter to start up again this year so that they can start the same old BS from last year. Poor old Tassie.
Clubs are allowed to pay players and always have. Can we get to the bottom of why everyone seems so worked up each year about players getting paid when it is part of the game?
I actually thought Zebras went ok , was good to see they had so many young guys in the squad and playing some decent football , I reckon south’s will self destruct with so many trying to make the starting team and fighting for a few minutes a game every week , but I suppose if your getting good money you can afford to put your feet up in the shade , Knights will win again this season , go the boys !
South Hobart is a business not a football club.
I do enjoy the 'Back in my day' crowd
Like there weren't big names being paid back in to 70's and 80's etc in some form or another
There has to be money there obviously but also South are a part of this new league in October, of course players want to be involved with that as well
Is there any update on the Hobart City situation?
South have no guaranteed spot in the nsd mate, learn to understand how the structure of football Actually works and then make a comment.
Yeah, they’re paying bigger wage bills than several NPL clubs
I’ve recently moved to Tasmania a few weeks ago and have been learning about the football structure here and today found out about your blog Walter. I was told it is one of the best places to grow my knowledge of Tasmanian footballer as someone who knows practically nothing apart from what I’ve learnt from the kingborough and south Hobart games on the weekends and what I’ve been told from people I have met. I just want to say I can certainly tell from the outside that south have lots of money floating around, say I’m wrong but I have football experience all across the Europe at the highest level playing and then coaching at a lower level. (My coaching career was not successful haha) I don’t want to make a scene of me and my family moving to Tasmania but I’m certainly intrigued about watching how the league this year plays out. Kingborough and south both seem very strong and play good football. I’m yet to see how the other teams play but those two certainly set a good standard for community football.
I apologise Mrs/Ms/Mr Anonymous for my terrible lack of knowledge, I will instead adapt what I said:
South have the possible chance of being in this new league and who wouldn't want to be part of such a potential chance by making the team as strong as possible and now with the new upgrades to Darcy Street it seems like there is a chance
I beg forgiveness ol champ ol pal ol mate of mine
xoxo
Stick to your Instagram Page old mate !
Wow OMG south pay players!! I can’t believe it! Call Tracy Grimshaw and get 60 minutes down to Darcy street ASAP this is gonna break the world! Get Elon Musk on the blower, X is gonna go into melt down!!
No one denies that South pay players - but what they actually pay them is far lower than what people may suspect. Players are attracted to more than just money; a winning culture and top coach are huge draws.
Get a life you dweeb
No, people endlessly claim on here that South don’t pay players...it’s always being denied. They seem very wound up about it
Have a look at Walter's previous blogs. People are always commenting that South don't pay their players.
Haven't seen a comment like that in years. Can you refer me to a specific post of Walter's in the last 2 years where someone has seriously claimed this in the comments (and I am not talking about a sarcastic ' we all know $outh don't pay players').
Who? Where?
Who...11,12 am
Find an example.
They owe a player not playing with them this year $ still. Thats an example.
