Liverpool demolish Real Madrid to reach quarterfinals of Champions League

Liverpool thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield this morning to qualify for the quarterfinals of the European Champions League 5-0 on aggregate.

It was Real Madrid's highest away defeat in Europe.

Two goals by Steven Gerrard and one each to Fernando Torres and Dossena did the damage.

Mascherano was incorrectly booked by the referee and will miss the first leg of the quarterfinals. It was Alonso who committed the foul, but the referee issued the yellow card to Mascherano. UEFA may well rescind the yellow card when they view the television footage.

Liverpool fielded more Spaniards than did Real Madrid. How the European and, indeed, the world game has changed.

In fact, there are 22 Spaniards at Liverpool, including back-room staff. What King Philip II and his Spanish Armada failed to do in 1588, Rafa Benitez is now doing with Liverpool FC - taking over England!

Chelsea also reached the quarterfinals with a 2-2 draw with Juventus in Turin, giving the Londoners a 3-2 aggregate win.

Iaquinta and Del Piero, the latter with a penalty, netted for Juventus, while Michael Essien and Didier Drogba scored for the visitors.

Villareal progressed 4-3 on aggregate after beating Panathinaikos 2-1 away in Athens, while Bayern Munich demolished Sporting Lisbon 7-1 in Munich and 12-1 on aggregate.

Twio words Walter: Spell check!!

Liverpool need two managers, one for European comps (Benitez suited to this role I believe) and one for domestic (Benitez NOT suited). How can a team turn in such an inconsistent performance in the domestic comp and totally dominate in CL??

Brad, it wasn't that I didn't use the spell check. I forgot myself for a second there and let my bias slip through.
