The University under-12 team returned from the Kanga Cup in Canberra on Saturday having reached the final, which they lost 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to Griffith Dream.

The score was 1-1 at the end of normal time and extra-time.

In the first group stage, University lost 1-0 to Adelaide City, beat Connells Point 2-0 through goals by Darcy Hall and Dean Watkins, and drew 2-2 with Griffith Dream courtesy of goals by Dean Watkins and Alex Walter.

Having finished second in their group, University progressed to the semi-finals, which consisted of two groups of three teams each.

Here they drew 1-1 with Fairfield Hotspurs, Watkins being University’s scorer, and beat West Pymble 1-0 through a Hall strike to qualify for the final.

The University squad consisted of 14 players and four support staff, including coach Gary Slicer, assistant coach Brent McKay and manager Brendan Johnstone.

“The grounds were very different to what the boys were accustomed to in Hobart,” said Johnstone.

“The pool games were played at Dickson, where the ground was very dry and hard with not much grass and the boys took time to get used to the higher bounce of the ball.

“Our first semi-final was played at Waramanga on a very small pitch, and the other semi-final at O’Connor, a very large ground with a great surface.

“The final was played at Woden Enclosed, a ground very similar to O’Connor.

“The games were fast, open and skilful and the boys were highly competitive in all their games even though they came up against some very big boys and some very, very fast players.”

Southern women’s coach, Jean-Pierre Raymond, is hoping that many people will stay behind after next Sunday’s A-League match between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United at Aurora Stadium to watch the South versus North intrastate women’s match at 3.15pm.

The curtain-raiser to the A-League game will be the South versus North men’s match, which kicks off just after 10am.

“It’s great that the girls have the opportunity to play on a good surface, so hopefully, they’ll have a decent crowd to support them,” said Raymond.

“It will be showcasing some of the best players in the State, including some good juniors and some of the more experienced players and we should have a good spectacle.

“I don’t know much about the northern team, but I’d like to think we can win.

Congratulations Gary and all of the boys.

Great to see that as per the Sth Hobart side which travelled away earlier in the year, that we are getting more success at junior level.

Also fantastic that once again this squad is littered with Islanders Futsal Academy players including Dean Watkins, Alex Walter, Darcy Hall and Gus Rumney and that they are obviously gaining a lot from their Futsal programs.

Fantastic achievement.

Southern squads - men's is strong, women's..... well leave that up to personal opinion shall we as the coaches seem to have done that......

rumour has it the mens squad has been trimmed down to 15/16.
any news on who got cut??

anyone want to have a bet the SWC match at wentworth park gets postponed? no chance of play with this weather.... CCC have probably already closed it! FFT do the sensible thing and move it to a ground that will be open... the last thing the comp needs is more postponed games that could be avoided.

ginger

each team can name 16 players and use all 5 subs.

Eamonn normally leaves it to last minute to name the 16.

Haha, It's funny that the southern women's squad has the coaches two daughters in it. Obviously with Olympic being top of the ladder with 68 goals for, 10 against and 41 points with the next team on the ladder having 25 points should have quite a few players in the squad.
Lauren Barnes who is going on a full soccer scholarship to USA, should defiantly be in the team, as should fellow Olympic defender Adelle Jarvis. Crystal Dean should also be in there. She scored a hat-trick while being marked by one of the JPR's daughters.
Shelly Cook from Glenorchy Knights the top goal scorer of the league isn't mentioned.
Clair Farquhar from South has surprisingly been over looked despite her success at the Nationals in 08.
JPR has perhaps shown favouritism and this will mean the southern team will not be at its absolute best.

Yeah, agree with jerrie - good on ya Gaz & his coaching staff - Uni are really booming with youth development over the last years - in both boys & girls - Gary & his team & also with Les Richardson employed as a youth development officer. How many other clubs are doing that?

Also Smithers - having had some Under 10's at princes Street going through Vikings futsal comp last year, I have seen the improvement that has brought them technically. So good on ya.

Interesting to see a number of TIS reps in the Women's team.

I wonder if Kelly cast his eye over the TIS mens team when picking his team

mad old man said...

Captain, i dont think Mr kelly would go to under 19 games to find his players.

Richard. What are you talking about. Uni have never done anything for Junior Development. The have a Central Region U/12 playing in Uni's U/13 comp. They pissed off all their supposed U/19's and got the TIS in. If they have supposedly done all this Junior Development then they would never have needed the TIS. I think you will also find that most, if not all, premier League clubs have Junior Development set ups and have been looking after their Juniors for many years and will do so for many more, Unlike Uni
