Fury and Jets still in hunt for A-League finals berths

North Queensland Fury kept alive their A-League finals hopes when they beat sixth-placed Newcastle Jets 2-1 at home at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville tonight.

The game had been postponed on Saturday because of storms and heavy rain.

Jets are sixth and are also still in line for a place in the finals. Fury are eighth and there are just two rounds remaining.

Matt Thompson put the visitors ahead with a superb volley in the 19th minute following a corner.

Jobe Wheelhouse should have added a second in the 25th minute when Thompson’s low right-wing cross put his team-mate in a one-on-one with the keeper, but Justin Pasfield blocked the shot.

Fury were level in the 39th minute when Chris Grossman volleyed home from just outside the box.

The winner came 10 minutes from the end through Chris Tadrosse, whose left-foot volley at the far post from Terry Cooke’s right-wing cross rocketed into the roof of the net.

Fury coach Ian Ferguson said his side only had a mathematical chance of qualifying and had two difficult games to go.

But, he said his team would never say die and they would keep fighting.
