The South Hobart Football Club unveiled its centenary shirts after training on Thursday night at the club rooms at Wellesley Park.

The shirts are replicas of those worn by South Hobart in the period 1912-1914 and are based on those shown in team photos of the time.

South Hobart played their first match on 21 May 1910.

The game was against a team from the steamship Westralia and South Hobart won 4-1.

The match was the first played at the new Washington Street ground, which soon became synonymous with Association Football in southern Tasmania.

The replica shirts, numbered from 1 to 15, were presented to the players who will face Glenorchy Knights at South Hobart on Sunday in a Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League top-of-the-table clash.

South Hobart currently leads second-placed Knights by 8 points.

“The centenary shirts will be worn only once and will then be caringly framed for posterity,” said Brian Downes, representing the South Hobart club.

“There will be fifteen players selected in the squad for this historic and iconic match with the whole essence of the framing being to continue the history of the club by effectively writing the fifteen players into the South Hobart Football Club’s history books.”

South Hobart’s senior coach, Ken Morton, said: “The players are looking forward to the day as they recognise the importance of the match.

“However, at the end of the day, it is just another match and everyone concerned will be working hard to make sure that we go out there and play good attacking football as we have been doing all season.”

Upon the framing of all the shirts, they will be auctioned at the South Hobart Football Club Centenary Dinner to be held on Friday 1 October 2010.

The auction process is yet to be fully confirmed, but it will be promoted internationally as well as extensively throughout Australia and Tasmania.

South Hobart President, Vicki Woods, said: “We are very excited and really proud of this achievement by the club as it is testimony to all the players, committee members and supporters over the past 100 years.

“I am not sure that Mr Honeysett and the 1910 team ever thought that their club would still be going 100 years later”.

Does this mean Sammy K won't be wearing his space suit? I'm paying admission just to see what sort frock he wears. I'm hoping for a pirate shirt.

I reckon knowing Sammy and his style, it may be some sort of Convict theme with black arrows on white.
Or maybe a Ned Kelly style armour.

Its not far off a pirate shirt. Give me any eye patch and I'll be set

1910 would have suited you Spamson. Stale vegemite and cheese rolls for lunch and pirate shirts as strips.
It only cost about 5 cents per day to live (about half of your current daily budget).
If only they had computer games, we'd be on the phone to Michael J Fox to get you back there.

Anonymous (11.49pm), I have no idea. I'm sure the club will announce that at an appropriate time.

This is exeptional work by Brian Downes on the concept and promotion and launch of an historic day for SHSC. It’s a big ask to get any media coverage for the Beautiful Game in Tasmania given the entrenchment of AFL and the network that hockey has in the corridors of power.
Bottom line is the clubs here are broke, have no facilities and no source of revenue other than gate takings and sponsorships. (don’t get me started on the Tasmanian poker machine deal) The only way the game can progress here is to promote the code to get bums on seats so the clubs can get themselves financial rather than to be bled to death by the administrative costs.
Whatever FFT does down the track surely a major focus in Tasmania must be on promoting the code & getting the clubs united & financial so they can provide high quality teams that supporters will come to watch.
