Maradona's Argentina off to perfect start

An early goal by Argentina proved sufficient for Diego Maradona’s men to beat Nigeria 1-0 in their Group B match in the World Cup early this morning [Tasmanian time].

Veron’s corner from the right was headed home by Heinze from 15 metres and that proved the only goal of the match.

Messi went close to scoring on several occasions, but the Nigerians held out.

The Nigerians were far from disgraced and might have scored themselves a few times as they fought for an equaliser.

South Korea lead the group on goal-difference from second-placed Argentina, while Nigeria are third and Greece fourth.
