Newcastle Jets moved off the foot of the A-League ladder with this 3-1 win over Adelaide United at the EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle last night.

Adelaide are in second place.

It was Newcastle’s first game at home since the ground was closed after a motorcross event had ruined the surface. As it was, only 70 per cent of the pitch had be relaid and the surface was far from satisfactory.

Francis Jeffers, the former Everton and Arsenal player and an England international, made his first appearance for the Jets as a guest player. He lasted an hour before being substituted but showed enough to suggest he will be useful.

Newcastle, who had had problems scoring this season, took the lead in the 4th minute when Nikolai Topor-Stanley headed home Kasey Wehrman’s corner.

It was 2-0 for the Jets in the 13th minute when Wehrman’s deep cross from the left was chested down by Topor-Stanley and into the path of Marko Jesic, who fired home.

Seven minutes after the break, Jesic added the third following a splendid defence-splitting pass from the left by Jeffers.

Iain Fyfe pulled a goal back for Adelaide with a header after he beat keeper Ben Kennedy to Cassio’s free-kick from midfield.

The Jets now seem to be on the climb, while Adelaide are in decline after losing their third game in the past four outings.

Adelaide beat Perth 2-0 in midweek. They have lost 3 in 4 it is true, but considering they were unbeaten for so long, and they are still an undeniably quality side, I think it's a little harsh to say they are in decline. They have hit a rough patch. It's whether they can get out of it and back on to their early season form. If they lose a few more in the next few weeks then sure, they could be in decline but I think it's a little early.
