North Queensland Fury 1-0 Sydney FC: Fury climb above Sydney on A-League ladder

North Queensland Fury 1-0 Sydney FC

North Queensland Fury won their first home game in five outings when they beat Sydney FC 1-0 at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville last night.

Sydney are now second-last on 18 points and the Fury are a place above them on goal-difference and just 5 points outside the top-six.

An error by goalkeeper Ivan Necevski gifted Fury their win.

In the 71st minute, Sydney’s Japanese striker Hirofumi Moriyasu conceded a free-kick just outside the box after handling the ball. He was also shown a yellow card.

Necevski parried Ufuk Talay’s free-kick into his own net for the only goal of the match.

Alex Brosque might have snatched an equaliser two minutes from the end when he outjumped his marker, but he directed his header just wide of the target.

Perth Glory prop up the remaining 10 teams and are a point behind Sydney FC and North Queensland Fury.

It was a close, tense game. Both sides had a lot to lose.
