University took over at the top of the
Southern Championship standings with a 4-2 win over Metro at KGV Park tonight.
The Students leapfrogged previous leaders
Hobart United and are a point ahead with both sides having played 11 games.
University received an early shock when Wade Hawkins put Metro in front after just 6
minutes,
But, Stuart Carnaby equalised virtually
from University’s kick-off following the goal.
With Luke Bighin, recently signed from
Hobart Zebras, and Tom McKernan controlling things at the back, University dominated
possession and Stuart Carnaby put them ahead in the 33rd minute.
Samuel Fahey gave University a two-goal
buffer to take into the half-time break when he netted his side’s third in the
39th minute.
Metro persisted in trying to play out from
the back in the second half and this enabled University to press high and again
control possession for long periods.
With University unable to extend their lead,
Metro grew in confidence and began to create some promising moves as the game
wore on.
University goalkeeper Elliot Hoysted took
some unnecessary risks and might have been punished on one occasion as Metro
gained possession inside the box.

University had a goal disallowed for
off-side, but Fahey’s speed was causing problems on Metro’s right flank as he
was repeatedly put through by accurate long passes from Bighin and Tom Roach in
midfield.
Kenneth Trak’s pace also caused Metro some
concern, but it wasn’t until 6 minutes from the end that Fahey grabbed his
second goal of the game to put University 4-1 ahead.
Metro refused to give in, however, and Hawkins
netted in the final minute to make it 4-2.
It could have been even closer when Metro
substitute Kye McQueen juggled the ball around a defender in the dying minutes,
but his shot flew straight at a relieved Hoysted.
