The Metro squad before the game against Nelson
Beachside will meet Metro and Taroona will take on New Town Eagles in the semi-finals of the Division One section of the Summer Cup competition after all four sides won their final group matches at Olinda Grove today.
Beachside finished top in Group A by downing a plucky Northern Suburbs DOSA 3-0.
Two goals by Colin Wain and one by Kurt De Jong gave Beachside their win, which could have been greater as both Patrick Bigg and Bernhard Klasen struck the DOSA woodwork.
New Town Eagles came second in Group A with a 1-0 win over an enthusiastic Hobart United, who were well served by Gaylet Mu and Suphachok Luekhamhan.
A 19th minute strike by Alex Ayres won the match, the ball coming off the inside of the far post and ricocheting into the net.
Taroona topped Group B after squeezing home 1-0 against Christian United, the goal coming from a free-kick by Alex Edwards seconds from the end.
An under-strength Taroona outfit, who rested their top players for Sunday’s semi-finals of the Steve Hudson Cup in Launceston, had the better of the opening half, but squandered chances that fell to Toby Dove, Edwards and Lucas Wyatt.
Christian hit back strongly in the second period and went close to scoring through Ashley Page and Kim Dae Won.
One of Page’s efforts struck the left-hand post, rebounded across the face of goal, and then came back into play off the right-hand post.
Metro came second in Group B courtesy of a 3-2 win over Nelson Eastern Suburbs.
Metro trailed 2-0 with just eight minutes gone as Drew Bannister volleyed a superb goal, while goalkeeper Simon Land helped Matthew Gasparin’s back-pass into his own net for the second.
But, Metro’s player-coach, Darrin Chaffey, pulled a goal back in the 14th minute and Danny Cowen’s strike midway through the half made it 2-2 at the interval.
One of Metro’s three new Scottish imports, striker Ricky Orr, hit the winner 10 minutes into the second period.
The question remains as to why there were no semi-finals in the Premier League section of the competition, with last Friday night and today having been vacant days and more than suitable for the semi-final pairings before Monday's final.
