Tilford Zebras and Hobart Olympic are Summer Cup winners

Zebras celebrate their Summer Cup win

Tilford Zebras retained the Summer Cup after beating Clarence United 4-3 in extra-time in a nail-biting final played before a large crowd at KGV Park this afternoon.

A goal in the dying seconds of the second period of extra-time by Aaron Brazendale - from Ben Crosswell’s pass - settled the issue.

Luke Cripps had given Clarence the lead with a penalty in the 21st minute, but Brazendale made it 1-1 on the hour after goalkeeper Michael Moschogianis did well to keep out Dwayne Walsh’s shot.

Clarence restored its lead in the 70th minute when Zebras’ keeper Troy Kaden fumbled Ben Hamlett’s shot and Chris Hunt struck home the loose ball.

Fabian Lapolla equalised 10 minutes from the end, after good play inside the box by former Clarence player Walsh, to take the match into extra-time.

A poor back-pass early in the second period of extra-time gifted Daniel Lapolla a goal to put the Zebras ahead for the first time, but Julian McMahon made it 3-3 when he turned home Hunt’s cross from the left a minute later.

With virtually the last action of the match, Crosswell played Brazendale through on the left with a clever back-heel and he scored with a low drive inside the far corner. Moschogianis got a hand to the ball but was unable to keep it out.

Hobart Olympic won the reserves Summer Cup, beating Clarence 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after the match ended 1-1 after extra-time.

George Kalis had given Olympic the lead with a penalty, but a marvellous volley by David Hoppitt four minutes from the end led to a scoreless period of extra-time.

Dipendra Kunwar, Dimitris Kanakaris, Harry Skalidis, Lee Mason and Emmanuel Tsakiris scored penalties for Olympic, as did Adam Mahoney, Brendan Garth, Adam Knapek and Andrew Barron for Clarence, but when Jake Undy shot wide, it was Olympic’s trophy.

[Detailed match reports to follow as soon as possible.]

Gee Walter can you write about how unlucky Clarence were not to win the summer cup final, personally I recon they played out of their skin, great job to Brownie he got the best out of them.. Zebras Shite to be honest, much better team then what they showed, Cains will be a great inclusion when he is back and fit, D Lapolla and F Lapolla were surprises, D still lacks a first touch but played well and always gives his all, F well always seems to have time on the ball and a great finish. Would have liked to see young Kurt get some more game time as Self looked out of sorts. Great to see Braz on fire.. maybe he can ignite Crossweel into playing like he is the best and not thinking it!! Any way try to write a story about Sth Hbt now Walter!!!! Go Juve and well done Chippa

Gee Danielle, your a bit hard on Walter there. Clarence were very good today and showed sign's that they will be a hard game for all opponents this year ( should finish top four )Zebras looked out of sort's early and climbed back into the game due to some poor keeping by Clarence with the keeper dropping the ball on numerous occasions , Zebras got two from such blunders. So now that is over we can all look forward to the real test ...The premier league.

2 great games and a great crowd (500??)

Clarence should have accounted for 10 man Olympic in extra time.

In the main game it was a matter of who was in front at the end.

the problem with clarence isnt the good teams in the league its the bad ones, the held south to 1 and 2 nil loses last year , had zebras on ice at 2 nil and lost it.
its against the likes of uni eagles boro that they slip up which proves they arent a good league team yet. but a good cup one.
