Metro have appointed Matthew Rhodes as their senior coach for the 2010 season.
Rhodes previously coached Taroona at senior men’s level and he has also coached women’s teams.
Metro president Craig Bidgood said the club had searched for a coach for the past six weeks.
“Matthew has spent a lot of time working with youth and under 19s and has been pretty much responsible for putting the Taroona side together that was successful this year,” Bidgood said.
“He comes across as vibrant, with good communication, and we think he has recruiting potential outside of our club.
“Mathew is qualified at senior level coaching and we hope he will bring a winning style to the club.
“It is fair to say we were disappointed with the quantity of quality applicants and, in a nutshell, they are basically not out there.
“We were unanimous with the decision and finalised things on Friday.
“The rest of the coaching panel will be announced in coming weeks.”

The current Taroona squad wasn't put together by Rhodes. Most of the players have come up through the Taroona youth system. Additionally, Horgan and McVeigh before him have done much better in terms of man management, particularly keeping confidence levels up in individual players.
Agreed "Fray".
Half of this years squad came after Rhodes - the rest were seniors before him.
The players that came with him (Gasparinatos, McKenna...)left.
sorry ........but a surprise appointment for me.
Rhodes may have spent some time with some juniors and alike .........but
..... no runs on the board to speak of ....
have to agree with into the fray and southern ......
Feel sorry for chaff .......
and what happened to Nicholson ......??
What about Bobby?
Good Bloke, not much of a squad to work with.
what about Bobby?
Took over Metro when they're about 5 points clear at the top of the ladder didn't he? And still somehow managed to come second!
hahahahaha metro mid table div 1 next year!
"It is fair to say we were disappointed with the quantity of quality applicants and, in a nutshell, they are basically not out there".
Did you ever think that maybe there is quality out there & the people that have the quality did not bother putting im for the Metro job as they saw what a joke it was last year & has been for a while now. So I guess with no quality out there you had to settle for Rhodes. If I was Darren Chafey I'd be pissed off that I got the ass from you blokes & then you go & get this guy in. Job well done I'd say

Complete rubbish!
Bit of a kick in the balls for the current staff to say that he was responsible for that, team is pretty different? i attended the nelson end of season dinner last year, Rhodes (then nelson womens coach) spoke out of turn and criticised the committee and coaching staff as he was presenting awards! time and a place, surely. not only that, but he claimed he had been offered to coach Glenorchy Knights (found this quite amusing as myself and Nick Harrison were there, both Knights players and aware Eamonn had already been offered the position). watched a bit of Taroona this year, must say they always try to play a good brand of soccer, nice movement. look forward to seeing them step up again this year. Good luck next year Metro, you'll need it.
if metro will be ruined by rhodes and a lack of scottish accents, hobart united are on the brink of folding, and uni don't have the players or the motivation to mount a serious title challenge, does that mean beachside will be a certainty to be playing permier league in 2011?
I heard big Jim has walked out on Metro too, that's gotta put a big hole in their budget. He has propped that club for years.
Hi Walter. What have you heard about teams nominating for Div One next season? Even if Hobart United do pull out of that league surley FFT cannot have direct promotion into the Premier league. Apart from Taroona & Beachside, sometime, I think most Premier reserves & even some U/19 side could win the Div One league. The comp is poor & I feel sorry for any club that has to go back there after the Premier league as surley their standard will drop.
I'm not having a go @ the other clubs. It;s more towards FFT for the way they have set things up & the lack of attention they have paid to this league. Will all the teams from this season nominate again or will we end up with 4 or 5 clubs. If so that will be a joke. My thoughts.
A very smart headline walter, but it should of read. All rhodes lead to dead end.
Seems like a controversial appointment. Maybe Walter could interview Rhodesy so that he can outline his coaching philosophy and tell us what makes him tick.
To one and all above including all anonymous'.......
I believe some of the comments above have been taken out of context. What I get out of it is: Matthew spent a lot of time with most of the current players while they were at u/19 level. We have also had some good feedback from some of those player's whom were at Taroona at the time.
As far as myself and Bobby Nicholson being disappointed at the decision, neither of us put our hands up for the role. In fact I don't mind saying I was part of the group that met with Matthew and was impressed with his outlook.
Metro FC have recently gone through major committee changes & I for one look forward to a revamped METRO FC in 2010.
R U Serious Ref....
I agree, Div 1 is in real trouble under the current criteria.
Dosa were forfeiting games this year in reserves.
University had TIS for u/19's.
As it was this year we had 7 teams... Will they all nominate again?
Not really ideal is it?
Chaf - once again you show your loyalty and class.
Maybe Metro will move forward with the departure of long serving individuals - allow the Club to re-invigorate.
Hopefully the Club hangs on to the good young talent it had this season.
Chaf, the only thing Rhodesy did around Taroona's U19 side was break plastic chairs.
was told tonight but not sure if true but corey smith has signed for metro and will be taking his vikings futsal with him to metro, if true this would be great for the club
@ googles.........
are you the same guy that said i was playing for launceston utd and then going to northern rangers?
seems a lot of truth in this last one! can't wait for the next chapter!
also there is no futsal played at metro.... although there will be a clinic withh the Chelsea FC Academy Camp in January that Metro players are welcome to attend and also a coaches seminar. I am also happy for metro players to compete in our comps.
corey im sorry if i was wrong but im just going by what i have been told by a metro person infact, they might just be wishing you were going back to the club who made you big, so where will you be playing this year corey?
I can only ASSUME that alot of this crap comes from with in the Taroona club...
In defence of Rhodes he gave a lot of aveage players an opportunity to play at a level they clearly wrent ready for or deserved to be in...
If not for the likes of Atkinson, Gasparinatos & Wells the club would never have stayed up...
To put alot of these worthless comments in perspective a Taroona player told me that they dont need to recruit any players to stay up this year... I hope you are right!
The problem at both Metro & Taroona is the players run the club...
Mr McKenna,
We certainly couldn't accuse you of being a player that runs a club, you've never been at one long enough...
Cant argue with you their ANG...
But with the way some of these football clubs self distruct can you blame anyone?
Plus in Tasmania you have to create your own challenges and goals... Its not like I move from clubs to win competitions...
Ive never been anything but a good sport and tried to help with player development... Not sure what else you would like me to do?
I cant type, I cant spell, I dont move real well... So I think the best place for me is in goals...
Off on a bit of a tangent there Mike, I'm pretty sure he Ang was just taking the piss!
No, I wasn't.
Mike,
after my laughable performance with the boots on at our kick around tonight -
I can definately say players aren't running Taroona :-)
@ googles..
at this stage i haven't given outdoor a thought for next year... i found last season a bit of a shambles to be honest and am unsure yet.... will start pre-season at knights and see how i feel! I haven't once mentioned moving clubs but seems to be a few rumours circulating? it's funny though as the clubs that i have had rumoured are the ones that i have never spoken to?
i certainly wouldn't say "the club that made me big" is metro....... i am not "big" for one and i won nothing while i was at metro.... every other club i have been with i've won silverware except metro??
i have heard corey that you are a very good go kart driver and was going to take that up as a profession
