South Hobart could be 8 points ahead of their nearest rivals at the top of the Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League by the end of the weekend.

By Saturday, they led second-placed Glenorchy Knights by 5 points after the latter could only play out a scoreless draw away to fifth-placed New Town Eagles at Clare Street.

A win for leaders South Hobart against fourth-placed Kingborough Lions United away at Lightwood Park on Sunday would give them an 8-point lead over Knights.

Knights have had a disastrous week. Their coach, Eamonn Kelly, resigned on the morning of the match against Eagles. He had been sent from the bench on the previous weekend and incurred a two-match ban, but the club suspended him for four games and he has still to appear before a Football Federation Tasmania disciplinary tribunal.

And Knights midfielder-cum-striker Corey Smith was against sent off. It was his second dismissal of the league season.

Third-placed Tilford Zebras fell further off the pace when they lost 4-3 to Taroona for the first time ever in the top flight.

Taroona raced to a 3-0 lead in 22 minutes as they took advantage of terrible defending by the Zebras.

Garry Hamilton put Taroona ahead from Jack Elliott’s pass after just three minutes, while Hugo Luttmer made it 2-0 in the 13th minute.

Toby Dove turned in David Abbott’s low cross from the left in the 22nd minute for Taroona’s third.

Abbott, signed last week from South Hobart, is proving a useful acquisition for Taroona, who were promoted this year from Division One. In his two games for the club, he has provided two assists for Dove and scored one goal - a penalty - himself.

Zebras rallied in the second half and a hat-trick by Ben Crosswell drew them level at 3-3 with just six minutes remaining.

Disaster struck for Zebras in the first minute of stoppage time when captain Andrew Telega fouled Hamilton and Abbott tucked home the spot-kick to give Taroona a 4-3 victory.

The stalemate between New Town Eagles and Glenorchy Knights was a controversial affair.

Amadu Koroma went close for Knights and Adam McKeown for Eagles in a first half that boiled over on the stroke of half-time when Koroma lunged at Eagles keeper Nathan Pitchford as he collected the ball.

Pitchford knocked Koroma down and was fortunate not to receive a red card. After consulting his assistant, the referee showed a yellow card to both players.

In the second half, McKeown again went close for Eagles, while the Knights’ Mynonge Kamba and Koroma both headed against the Eagles crossbar.

Smith was shown a yellow card for a foul on Pitchford and was then sent off near the end after a second yellow card following his foul on Josh Quan.

Olympia Warriors are having a disastrous year and set a new Olympia club record when they went ten matches without a win. They are celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year, so they needed this new club record like a hole in the head.

Last Sunday, they drew 2-2 with Taroona, while on Saturday night they lost 3-1 away to Clarence United.

Kosta Grillas and Lee Mason netted Olympia’s goals against Taroona, who replied through Toby Dove, who netted both goals from David Abbott crosses.

Against Clarence, Grillas gave Olympia the lead, but goals by Andy Barron, Ben Parker and Luke Huigsloot gave Clarence the three points.

In the Forestry Tasmania Northern Premier League, Northern Rangers and Launceston City drew 3-3, Riverside Olympic succumbed 3-2 at home against Ulverstone, Devonport City beat Burnie United 4-1 away at Montello, and visiting Somerset overcame Launceston United 4-3.

ok walter 3rd photo down u can clearly see that pitchy is laying the knee in karomas head and craig phillips is looking straight at why the hell isnt pitchford sent off for it ???????

Smith's tackle on Pitchford should have been a straight RED. Great role model for all his young Indoor kids.

Game was pretty good. Draw fair result although both teams did deserve a goal or to. Score draw maybe have been fair

wrong - what you can see is pitchy telling koroma he's a ........ in the second photo, and then the 3rd photo is koroma pushing up into pitchy.

nothing unusual about that from pitchy

Time for a big reality check from all the posters and administrators of this blog........
One asks why the football is in such a state of disarray in Tasmania.
Lets start with the posters on here never looking for good points on teams and individuals but rather dwell on the muck racking mentality most obviously possess.
Then we move on to the baiting of those affected to get a reply to attempt proving the poster is worth listening too.
Follow this by using the pretence of being the person mentioned to give false replies and further generate club and player hatred.
Its no wonder people and players are bailing out and our loved sport is becoming a total joke to all who are or were involved in it.
Some players appear to be persecuted by over the top red and yellow cards and some escape without mention maybe this is due to there rocking the boat by achieving results in other areas and upsetting the head honchos at fft - hopefully not the case but its starting to smack of victimisation to the select few .
Come on people if you dont have the spine to do it in person dont do it at all or sooner than you all think football in this state will become like baseball and vanish

has crips forgotton how to score?

How does a guy score 26 goals or something last year and score 1 up to round 9 the year after.

he is nowhere in the league of mckewon or crosswell. hopfully the southern team will reflect that this year.

was it 25 flukes last year??

The photos dont show the intial contact from Koromas studs on the keeper's foot (when the ball was in keeper's hands)- which is the reason for the reaction. No contact of signifigance from any player in the gathering that ensued.

Im sure whatever Amadu did was nothing compared with what a certain Hobart Utd striker does 4-5 times a game every week.

On another point, I hear Olympic must be confident of taking the wooden spoon as I have it significant pressure is about to be applied to FFT board to change the promotion/relegation rules.

We usually move the goalposts too look after vested interests every couple years, so I predict that is what will happen yet again.

relegation and promotion should be extended to all leagues and certainly not done away with.it should be tough to get into the premier league and tough to stay in there.after all only the best should be in there.the not as good go to div 1.in the rest of the world it is called competition, hopefully tassie will finally catch up.

Anonymous said...

Nah, word is promotion/relegation arrangements are now 'locked in'.

12 games to go.

FFT would be shot down in flames if it removed relegation partway through the season. The President of Olympia should get his cupboard ready to display his nice wooden spoon. Once they go down thats it. Time to face the music Olympia

Pixel 40 said...

well Taroona is doing well,
and if FFT would to change the structure PL clubs would have nothing to play for, not to mention div one clubs working hard to improve their structure, I for one would not worried about div 1 if that would off been the case

cripps does a hell of lot more for clarence than score goals. Best captain they've had a long time. Leads the entire team well. Works hard.

Must admit he didnt start in the best form this year but his last two or three games have been back to his best.

clarence will continue to improve as the year goes on. not that you take much from beating olympic. sorry but they are terrible. will def end up in div one.

observer said...

If things were really as bad as I hear they were/are at Olympia, then it may not be a bad thing for the club to take a step back before they move forward. However I do not think that back to Div 1 is acceptable from the club's perspective.Having said that , there are still many games to be played yet and Taroona ,Kingborough ,Clarence and Eagles are all still very much in touch with the possibility of relegation.None of them are out of danger by any means.Olympia is only 2 games behind CLarence who are three positions further up the ladder. I would not be all that comfortable if I were any of these teams either.Still a long way to go and many games for improvement ( or deterioration) depending on which club you follow.

Anonymous said...

Because cripps isn't that good a player maybe? he scored majority of his goals from 6 yard box or penalties. which is fine, a goal is a goal. but because clarence aren't playing their best, he isn't scoring. he doesn't beat a few players and score, or set up an attacking play and finish it. he works hard and is a leader, but as for his general skill, he isn't too flash...

it must be a hard pill to swallow when you are sent off and then the player that you supposedly foul goes and apologises to you after the game and says he wasn't touched and tripped on his own feet? can only feel sorry for smithers on this occasion, and r u serious ref? that comment is ridiculous

smithers ol man, it is you who needs the reality check mate. if you think for a second that smith is "victimised" or picked on in any way it just shows how naive both of you are. Anyone in life gets what they deserve. Its time to realise buddy that we all have to play with the cards we are dealt and to stop looking outwards for excuses and start looking inwards for answers. There is nothing wrong with the game at the moment, only a select few who are involved in it. Minority does not rule. If you dont like it....change it, if you cant change it.....go play baseball.

if olympia gets relegated the club will not survive.

jerrie kruijver said...

if olympia cannot survive because of relegation,it is only because the people in that have no commitment to their club.any club is only as strong as the people in it.for any club to do well it needs loyal committed people in it.metro is a prime example of a healthy div1 club.we have seen too many clubs fall over in the last 20 years to show that without a vision and loyal supporters any will die.unfortunately we have too many little spoilt prats who think they are bigger then their club or the game.the only thing they have in common with johan cruijf is his insufferable ego at 17 years of age but have nowhere near his talent.get yourself together and serve your club.with relegation in place the sad fact is every year some club will go down the good thing is every year some club will go up

to corey's credit he has made attempts to change his ways this year or so it appears and all to no avail as far as i can see, of course his reputation proceeds him but i have been at all knights games this year and feel he has been very unlucky to receive the cards he has this year

Jerrie ,I am in no way an Olympia supporter ,however their president is one of the most passionate people I have met in relation to both his club and the game. There are others on the committee who are also just as passionate an committed. How you can say that their people have no commitment is beyond comprehension. Some of their supporters ,well thats a different story. It depends who you refer to when you say "their people".

Anonymous said...

(anonymous 7.21) i was speaking to corey later that night and he admits he tripped the player over. both players knows and knew what happened! i think your just making a whole lot of stuff up to feel sorry for him

jerrie kruijver said...

interested, the supporters are the lifeblood of every club.i dont doubt that all those clubs that have fallen over had a committed few that were running it,but every club needs a solid base of committed supporters and players who are prepared to be with you thru bad times and good times.if you dont have people your club will die.

jerrie kruijver said...

also interested i was reacting to an anonymus statement that said olympia would not survive if it was relegated.at no point did i imply that olympia did not have a committed few people that are running the club.

Anonymous said...

The ethnic based clubs Knights,Warriors,Zebras,Eagles will never die. Their communities will not allow that to happen. Warriors may well get relegated but die? Naaa not going to happen. Their President will not let it happen on his watch.

interested said...

Jerrie ,yes you did. You said that if they did not survive due to relegation " it would be because the people in there have no commitment to their club ". That sounds very much like they dont have commited people running the club.

jerrie kruijver said...

interested all isaid was that the club would die if the supporters and players leave the club in the lurch. i have no doubt that people will fight to keep their club alive.the operative word is if.maybe if you read the post again interested?

jerrie kruijver said...

interested a cub is much more then just a commitee running it a club is players, supporters and commitee.no point in having 10 committed chiefs if there are no committed little indians

I have seen a number of Olympia games this year as a keen supporter of Olympia and football and I am disappointed at the lack of effort and passion by both the players and coaching staff. If only they had the spirit and belief of their president and committee members. As much as it pains me I believe relegation awaits us. So as a passionate supporter show some heart and commitment to at least perform proudly on the park. I think back to the proud history and wonder about those warriors of yesteryear such as Craig "Smirf" Nichols, Berwick, Goldsmith and Sherman to name a few. If you current crop of players are reading this blog, show some pride and desperation and figt to stay in the SPL.

Anonymous said...

It all starts on the track and it aint happening. Wot you see on the park on the weekend is a result of that. There are players there that want to play on the weekend but arent prepared to do the hard yards during the week and it shows BADLY. Not a lot of depth so some players know there not goingg to be dropped. If yopu act like a div 1 player you will become one except I'm guessing these slackerers will leave if the worst happens. I wouldn't *%^& on some of them if they were on fire.

good to see in the photos that good old shane kent didnt move. good on ya champ. sticking up for your team mates. thats ok they prob wouldbnt help u out in a fight anyways. except for starng as he is on your level of maturity.
