Two Tasmanians have taken out major awards at the Football Federation Australia awards ceremony in Sydney this evening.

Patrick Galloway, one of Tasmania’s youngest up-and-coming referees was named as referee of the year.

And, Michelle Castle, who coaches the nelson women’s side, was announced as the female coach of the year.

Both will be interviewed as soon as possible and those interviews published on this site.

Not too sure about young Patrick being given that honour. Yes, is an up and coming ref but is still lacking (in my mind that is) a little maturity and respect for players that he needs to learn as he gets a little older and wiser.
Reminds me of another ref (I. Jolic) who was also similar but as he got older and more mature, he started to respect the players who respected him back during games.

Tripod.

Yeah awesome Tripod. Knock a bloke as soon as he wins an award. Go get a life. What you say may be true, maybe it's not, regardless - save it for another time and just congratulate the kid!

One thing is for sure though, at least Patrick knows how the game should be played and doesn't turn it into a game of netball like Ivan!

Well done Patrick, keep up the good work!

Big Congratulations to Michelle!

Well done !

Well done Patrick, I know you do this for all the right reasons. There will always be knockers, but most of them wouldn't last 5 minutes with the whistle during a prem league game.

This is a huge wrap on Tassie to win a national award.

seriously how can you win a national award if your not the best referee in tasmania? and how can you win an award for best coach if your not the best female coach in tasmania?

sorry i don't understand the process. congratulations to michelle though who is an outstanding ambassador for the womens game and a great up and coming coach none the less.

Congratulations to Michelle Castle. She makes a huge difference to the Nelson club and the award is a just reward for all her hard work.

Congrats to both Pat & Michelle.

Walter, I'm a little confused. Has Patrick been named the overall Australian referee of the year? or the Tasmanian referee of the year?

if it's the former, on what basis has he beaten out A-League referees?

Anonymous 11am, it's the FFA Awards so it has to be the Australian Referee of the Year. I don't know the criteria used, but I'll be interviewing Patrick when he returns and all will be revealed.

It's strictly non-professional for the referee category.

It still amazes me these days that people who don't know something don't do 2 minutes of research. All of the information is on the FFA website.

You must be kidding.

tbf it wasn't exactly that clear from walter's article anon. In any even, I'm not sure that there's a single professional ref in australia, so there you go

Gobsmacked!

Now, let's get some of our players into A League Youth teams - not as the best in Aus but just good enough to be 1 or 2 out of 165!

"tbf it wasn't exactly that clear from walter's article anon."

I'm fairly sure I said there that for that exact reason, I'm puzzled that people don't go from Walter Pless blog to the FFA website. It's much quicker than waiting for a response here when the internet is almost instant.

"In any even, I'm not sure that there's a single professional ref in australia, so there you go"

Almost a good point. I didn't reeeeeally think I would have to spell it out for everyone as I'm fairly sure we all know that the A-League refs have professional jobs during the week. But the league is still professional so I thought that if i just wrote 'non-professional' people would be able to make the mental leap in their minds as to why A-League refs were not in the running. Apparently not.

So if Patrick is not even close to being the best ref in Tas, how can he possibly be the best in Aus?
He has a lot to learn about respect and professionalism. After the way he treated the Olympia people during a game he shouldn't even have been on the radar.

not sure that this matters, there are dozens of referees on the mainland that are better than patrick etc...

fft reprimanded Patrick for the olympia game , he got a week . a suspended player cant win the vic tute . he learnt his lesson , dont tell a team to enjoy div 1 next year while the game is still being played . may be a great ref one day but far from it this year . rob f shame

who cares as we have confirmed once again fft and ffa awards are as big a mockery as the mercury newspaper
barker ref of the year, fielding vic tut, patty ref of the year and michelle castle the worlds best coach after guiding nelson u/13s to a historic first victory

I think FFA look at things like commitment, volunteering extra hours, attitude to the game etc etc. Not just skill with the whistle.

Winning this award may make Patrick even more determined to become a better referee than he already is. I hope it does as I'm sure you do to.

But clearly, you can't see past the dirt piled on him to see this. Go take a long, hard look at yourself and stop being so bloody negative. Also considering the fact I'd bet you don't know dozens of refs on the mainland - shut up with your generalisations.
