Newcastle Jets 1-1 Sydney FC
Newcastle Jets drew 1-1 with Sydney FC on Sunday afternoon to keep alive their hopes of a place in the finals.
The draw at a wet and windy EnergyAustralia Stadium spelled curtains for reigning champions Sydney FC, who are now out of contention in regard to defending their crown.
Bruno Cazarine put Sydney ahead 14 minutes from the end. He was tightly marked in the left of the box by Sam Gallaway but held the defender at bay as he controlled a throw-in. Cazarine managed to turn and smash the ball inside the far corner of the net past a helpless Ben Kennedy in the Newcastle goal.
Six minute from the end, substitute Sasho Petrovski grabbed the equaliser. A free-kick from deep in defence by Jobe Wheelhouse found Nikolai Topr-Stanley on the right of the box and he nodded the ball towards the far post, where Petrovski forced the ball home, despite a lunging challenge from Cazarine.
Petrovski was fortunate not to be sent off as he kicked the sole of Cazarine’s boot after he scored and as the Sydney striker lay on the ground.
Newcastle are six points adrift of 6th-placed Wellington Phoenix with two games to play.
It was Sydney’s sixth game in a row without a loss, but they needed a win to stay in with a chance of defending their title.
