South Hobart victory in Women's Summer Cup Final a costly one

South Hobart were largely untroubled in winning the Women’s Super League Summer Cup Final 2-0 against Devonport City at Lightwood Park on Saturday.

It was an expensive victory, however, as captain Lucy Roberts, who scored a sensational long-range second goal, was stretchered off with what appeared to be a knee ligament injury.  She was expected to have scans later in the week to determine the nature and extent of the injury.

South got off to a good start against a young Devonport side and Samantha Watkins put them ahead after only 12 minutes when Devonport keeper Michaela Mitchell spilled a shot and Watkins stroked the ball into an empty net.

Devonport’s experienced Lucy Foote and Georgia King tried to rally their side but South Hobart kept applying the pressure and were rewarded with a second goal in the 38th minute when Roberts lobbed home a free-kick from long range.

The second half was a more even affair but neither side could score and so it was South Hobart’s trophy.

Apart from Roberts, they also lost Sophie Westwood through injury.

Ace striker Josephine Mamic was also a surprise absentee from the South Hobart line-up.

South Hobart were fortunate not to have goalkeeper Jenna Farrow sent off for a late and robust tackle on a Devonport forward on the stroke of half-time.  She was just shown a yellow card and conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Devonport goalkeeper Mitchell was also cautioned deep into injury time at the end of the game, as was Devonport’s Madeline Payne shortly after half-time.

Roberts managed to attend the trophy presentation at the end of the game while hobbling on crutches.

She will be missed in the club’s league campaign if the injury is as bad as feared.

That tackle by Souths GK farrow was as clean as a whistle. However, even if it was a foul the play restarted from a throw in after the foul and yellow card? How is this in the rules and acceptable.

Why was Farrow playing? Was Kacee injured?
