Sydney FC are back on top of the A-League ladder after downing fourth-placed Newcastle Jets 3-1 away at EnergyAustralia Stadium this afternoon.
Alex Brosque missed two good chances for the visitors in the opening half.
In the 13th minute, his angled drive was superbly saved by goalkeeper Ben Kennedy, while 10 minutes later he swept his effort wide of the far post from John Aloisi’s low cross from the left.
Jobe Wheelhouse put Newcastle in front in the 32nd minute when he ran onto a well-timed and accurate pass by Matt Thompson before planting a left-foot shot inside Clint Bolton’s near post.
But, Aloisi equalised on the stroke of half-time when the ball fell perfectly for him and he stroked it past and across Kennedy with his left foot and inside the far right-hand post.
Stuart Musialik put Sydney ahead five minutes after the resumption, while Chris Payne netted Sydney’s third, and his first of the season, in the 4th minute of stoppage time.
It was not a good ending to Newcastle coach Branko Culina’s 300th game as a coach in Australia’s top-flight competitions.
The attendance was 9,892.
