North Queensland Fury suffered their sixth loss in a row when they succumbed 3-0 at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Townsville to Melbourne Victory on Wednesday night.
Fury coach Franz Straka again failed to attend the post-match media conference as he was too emotional to speak. At this rate, we’ll never hear from him again.
The loss left the Fury in last place, 4 points adrift of second-last Perth Glory.
Melbourne Victory are in fifth place, just ahead of Melbourne Heart.
The Fury missed at least three good chances during the match, David Williams missing the first after just 6 minutes and substitute Chris Grossman the third towards the end of the game when he missed an open goal after Victory goalkeeper Michael Petkovic was out of position.
Billy Celeski had missed a glorious opportunity for Melbourne in the 7th minute when faced with a one-on-one with Fury goalkeeper Justin Pasfield. Celeski shot straight at the keeper.
Danny Allsopp gave Victory the lead in the 27th minute, finishing off a fine move involving Carlos Hernandez and Tom Pondeljak down the right. Hernandez had put Pondeljak away on the flank and his crisp cross to the near post was swept home by Allsopp.
Substitute Mate Dugandzic headed the second in the 69th minute after Pasfield had punched a corner straight to him.
A poor back-header by Eric Akoto led to Victory’s third goal. Dugandzic intercepted the ball and appeared to have made a bad angle for himself as he rounded the advancing Pasfield and ran to the right. But, he swept the ball inside the far post, past a wrong-footed Mark Hughes, who had made it back to the goal-line.
