Overnight results from overseas

Football truly is the world game and it always delights me when there are international matches.

Looking at the list of results is a lesson in geography, religion, politics, economics, culture, music, language and many other things apart from just sport.

As a former teacher, it makes me want to take a class of young students again and use such international results to further their understanding of the above-mentioned subjects.

Why was the Egypt versus USA match postponed? Why did the Algeria versus Tunisia game not go ahead? In which continent are DR Congo and Gabon? What are the capital cities of all these nations?

Gee, it really does almost make one want to teach again.

While on this topic, a book you may want to look at is "The Thinking Fan's Guide to the World Cup", edited by Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey. It's published by Abacas.

It includes chapters by Geoff Dyer, Dave Eggers, Nick Hornby, Henning Mankell and Eric Schlosser.

Although it deals with the 2006 World Cup, it's a fascinating read.

Ask Ian Campbell, the former DOSA coach and manager of Dymock's in Centre Point, to get it for you.

Anyway, here are the overnight results. They make fascinating reading.
