Metro gained their first win of the Southern Championship season when they downed Hobart United 5-3 at home at North Chigwell tonight in a League Cup match.

Metro scored first through Andrew Robb in the 6th minute.

Solomon Lagu equalised for the visitors in the 20th minute.

Two goals in three minutes then gave Metro a 3-1 lead.

Matthew Robb made it 2-1 in the 34th minute, while Wade Hawkins added Metro’s third in the 36th minute.

Elhadi Eldayar pulled a goal back for Hobart United in the 42nd minute, but it was Metro that trooped off at half-time with a 3-2 lead.

Danny Cowen scored a beautiful opportunistic goal in the 52nd minute to increase Metro’s advantage to 4-2.  A shot was blocked and as the ball rebounded outside the box, Cowen struck a lethal first-time shot into the back of the net from 20 metres.

He almost had a second, but Hobart United goalkeeper Hammad Shabir somehow got a finger-tip to Cowen’s bullet-like shot and turned the ball onto the top of the crossbar and out for a corner.

Metro survived a fierce onslaught by United as they hit the woodwork and had two shots blocked by good goalkeeping by Jamie Cook and resolute defending by his back-line.

Abel Berhane netted for the visitors in the 68th minute to make it one goal the difference at 4-3.

But, Joshua Newell made it 5-3 when he hit Metro’s fifth a minute into stoppage time.

Cowen showed by his performance that he could easily still be playing in the NPL.

In the Southern Championship Reserves, Hobart United prevailed 3-1 against Metro, who missed a penalty when the ball rebounded off the left-hand post.

Jameson Negri (23rd minute), Moses Kangogo (42nd) and Huon Oh Marris (70th) were Hobart United’s marksmen, while Karin Ali replied for Metro in the 50th minute.

Quality save by United’s keeper. Not the first time he’s kept his team in the game.
