South Hobart's lead in Southern Championship whittled away

South Hobart is gradually seeing its lead at the top of the Men’s Southern Championship standings whittled away.

They drew last weekend and lost on Sunday and are level on points with second-placed Taroona.

Taroona produced some good football against South Hobart on Sunday under interim coach Riley Pitchford, who has replaced Scott Gannon.

Oliver Maxwell netted both Taroona goals.

The first came in 11th minute, but it was cancelled out by Jacob Herbert’s penalty a minute after the interval.

Maxwell showed courage to beat South keeper Thomas Cordell to the ball and slot it home midway through the second half.

Taroona suffered a blow when Ned Goodsir was injured later in the second half.  He was tackled strongly and fell heavily and suffered a suspected broken collar bone.  He was stretchered off and an ambulance was summoned.  He was treated by paramedics and transported to hospital.

Sam James was prominent for Taroona, as were Fabian Natoli and Will Stalker.

On Friday night, bottom-side Glenorchy Knights were handed a thrashing at home at KGV Park by New Town White Eagles, the reigning champions.

The floodlights on one pole went out in this game, creating an area of darkness, and this is not a good sign.

Matthew Pace hit a hat-trick for Eagles, whose other goals came from Adam McKeown, Jamie Vernon, George Ivanov, and an own-goal by Nicholas Westenberg.

Goals by James Ackerley, Feisal Baddiley and Tyson Barrett gave Olympia Warriors a 3-1 win over Clarence Zebras, who replied through Zane Ryan near the end.

South East United were reduced to 10 men away to University at Olinda Grove when their goalkeeper, Felix Kinghorn, was sent off midway through the opening half.

The visitors were leading 2-1 at that stage through a brace by Ethan Griggs.

Daniel Goodluck reduced the arrears before the send-off, but Jacon Satori’s goal in the 34th minute gave South East United a 3-1 lead.

Ramiro Vilar netted for University on the stroke of half-time to make it 3-2 in favour of the visitors at the break.

Neither side could score in the second half and the visitors held out with 10 men to win a game which saw some ferocious tackles and five yellow cards apart from the red (3 to University and 2 to South East United).

Hobart United came away from Sandown Park with a 3-1 win over the home side, Hobart City.

Dhor Ngor-Aouol put United ahead late in the first half and second-half goals by Vincent Kamano and Bary Karia made it 3-0 with 20 minutes remaining.

Luka Johnston grabbed a consolation goal for the home side in the 71st minute.
