Glenorchy Knights put up a brave show but still succumbed 3-0 away to New South Wales NPL club NWS Spirit on the artificial surface at Christie Park tonight in a Round-of-32 Australia Cup tie.
The Tasmanians were not embarrassed and could quite easily have scored.
Knights hit the crossbar and were presented with a couple of one-on-one situations in which they failed to score.
Their failings were those of most Tasmanian sides playing in national competitions - an inability to score, even from good chances.
They also had a couple of good opportunities charged down and blocked when the goal was gaping.
Centre-back Jack Glover was probably the best player for the Knights.
NWS Spirit had double the possession of the visitors and scored three times in relatively easy fashion as the Knights defence were caught off guard.
Michael Konestabo put Spirit in front in the 27th minute, while Richie Darko made it 2-0 5 minutes later and that’s how it stood at half-time.
Zachary Cianci’s goal in the 61st minute killed off Knights, who kept on fighting and created several chances without finding the net.
Knights actually had more shots on goal and on target than Spirit but lack of finishing cost the Tasmanians dearly.

Out of interest, what is the furthest round that a Tasmanian club has progressed in an Australian cup competition, either in recent times or in past cup competitions like the old ampol cup and so on.
Great plan, well executed - just needed a Morton or an Ichimura up front

Devonport's 2 wins in 2016 and 2018 are the only wins by a Tasmanian team in the Aus Cup-NSL Cup - FFA Cup - Aus Cup History. Tasmanian teams did once enter at the Quarter Final stage, so that is technically the furthest progression. However, Devonport's paths to Rd of 16 involved winning a game, so that should be treated higher imo.
Hunty Olympia defeated South Melbourne Hellas in the NSL cup to make the semi finals.

I remember Olympia beating South Melbourne Hellas a few years ago and then going to Perth to play but wasn't sure if anyone had progressed past the first round as such.
That was the NPL finals, rather than a cup competition. South Hobart also won a semi final and hosted Sydney Utd 58 in the final in the first edition of the same competition in 2013 I believe.
Did South Hobart not beat a team from South Australia at Darcy St years ago?
It was good to see a Tassie team go and take it to the bigger sides rather see that then a dull 1-0 or 2-0 loss
Correct, Olympia beat South Melbourne in NPL Finals Series, before losing to Bayswater over in Perth.
And to Anon 6:27, yes beat Campbelltown City in the first NPL Finals Series and hosted Sydney United in the final the week after.
Doubt there will ever be an NPL Finals Series again.

Cordwell and Redfearn are the best two forwards in this league by far please stop
Dillon looks a more natural finisher than those two, I agree with that earlier comment, Morton and Ichimura upfront would be a great combination, unleash the money and make it happen
I would take Swaby over all of them, without him City would probably be on par with Clarence and Riverside this year
