South Hobart came back from being an early goal down to beating Green Gully from Victoria 3-2 at South Hobart Oval on Saturday.
This followed last weekend’s 3-0 win over another Victorian outfit, Pascoe Vale.
But, whereas Pascoe Vale are in the Victorian NPL 2 competition, Green Gully are in the Victorian NPL top flight.
South Hobart’s new senior NPL coach, Max Clarke, can be said to have made an auspicious start at the helm.
Deklan Wynne gave the Victorians the perfect start after just 6 minutes, but Kobe Kemp, who has returned to South Hobart from Kingborough Lions United, equalised in the 19th minute.
Excellent goals by Nick Morton in the 24th and 32nd minutes gave South Hobart a 3-1 lead at the interval.
Brayden Portelli’s speed and expert flick at the near post four minutes after the resumption pulled a goal back for the visitors, but South Hobart were able to hang on for the win.
They could, in fact, have increased their lead before the end but had several shots blocked on the line and cleared in the nick of time by a desperate Green Gully defence.
Former South Hobart player Kasper Hallam played for Green Gully, while former South Hobart goalkeeper Kieran Brown was back after four years in the USA and was in goal for South in the second half.
Brown leaves for the Republic of Ireland this week, where he has several trials scheduled.
Regular custodian Nick O’Connell was between the posts in the first half.
Alfred Hess and Eli Wright also got runs after returning to the club from Kingborough Lions United.

Kingborough Lions United drew 1-1 with Clarence Zebras at Lightwood Park.
New signing from Riverside Olympic, Emanuel Francisco Ponce Farias, netted for the Lions in the 62nd minute, although Clarence Zebras’ Kane Hatcher may have got the last touch but succeeded only in firing the ball into the roof of the net.
James Ackerley stunned the home side with an equaliser from 20 minutes three minutes from the end.
The Lions had the better of the match in terms of possession but succumbed to that late sucker punch, which must have been disappointing for their new coach, Jon Fenech.
The Lions had their two Korean imports on view, midfielder Kim Hyeon (who used to be with South Hobart), and winger Park Egan.

Southern Championship sides, Hobart City and South East United had little success against NPL opponents.
Hobart City went down 5-1 to Riverside Olympic at Edgeworth Street in Warrane, while South East United succumbed 5-3 to Launceston City at Sorell.
Both southern clubs have ambitions for bigger things, but they may have to reassess and go back to the drawing board if they are going to trade punches one day with the big boys.
Riverside Olympic led Hobart City 3-0 at half-time and ran out comfortable winners in the end.
City almost got a second goal in the second half when their player-coach, Michael Monticchio, rattled the Riverside crossbar with an excellent free-kick from 30 metres.

The Lions imports did absolutely nothing
The 2 new Koreans, Kawano, Ponce & Villar, plus Eliasson in their 21's make 6 visa players for Boro, unless someone is happy to correct me. Noticed this in the previous thread. Wonder if half of the above are happy to play 21's all year...
It is possible for some of them to not only gain citizenship to the country, but also take up other roles within the club, such as goalkeeper coach or u21s coach.
Sad State of affairs all those imports for a club with a huge catchment area ,We’re are all their young players !!
Bought by $outh Hobart? Need a balance to be fair ( if they have visa slots why not use them?)
I believe it is pre season and not all of those players have signed. Kawano and Ponce I believe are signed and the coach has to make a decision between park, Kim and Ramiro for who takes the third spot. Borough are just trying to make sure they make the correct decision with their import slots, a smart move by the new coach in my opinion.
In order, which teams are strongest this season?
It will be between Launy United and Riverside. The rest are just there to make up the numbers
1 - South Hobart
2 - Devonport
3 - Glenorchy
4, 5, 6 could go anyway between Launceston City, Kingborough and Clarence
7 - Riverside
8 - Launceston United
From what I have seen and heard this season so far:
1. South
2. Kingborough
3. Devenport
4. Launcestaun city
5. Glenorchy knights
6. Clarence
7. Riverside
8. Launcestaun united
I believe max Clark and Jon fenech are both leading their teams to success this year could be a real battle between the two most southern teams for the title. I know the lions drew to Clarence on the weekend but they had complete control over the game, looked super fit and sharp. And max Clark has south a very strong squad that are well prepared as we all know but I truly believe Jon fenech and the lions could give everyone a shock this year.
Launceston United
Clarence Zebras
Riverside
Kingborough
Launceston City
Glenorchy Knights
Devonport
South Hobart
Clarence are nothing compared to kingborough, Clarence coming on here mouthing about the lions import situation. Can we talk about the clarence situation, the biggest player pool for an npl club in Tasmania other than devonport, they have the whole eastern shore at their disposal yet they continually only finish in the bottom half of every league.
I’d say Kingborough have so many imports playing in a pre season game to see who’s best to sign. It’s not a crazy thing only when Borough do it. As for biggest catchment area that’s very bald considering glenorchy, clarance and davenport all have bigger pools of players.
Let’s be real if South don’t win the league that will be the biggest upset in how many years?
Who exactly from Clarence is on here?
It's common knowledge the northern suburbs have a very small catchment area for football.
Give it a rest Kingborough are the most disappointing club in the last 40 years never ever won anything !
Simply a flop of a club performance wise.
Kingborough needs a Mitch Owen
People complaining about imports and money etc are all morons. Why would you not want the league to attract some attention and retain good footballers?! Money makes it competitive. Something which has lacked in previous years. The competition is struggling, and teams are now spending money and bringing in imports and everyone sooks..
Theres a reason everyone always talks about kingborough mate, big things are coming. The fenech era will be like no other.
South have accumulated a lot of players but Kemp and Walter will be key. If they remain fit, South will go undefeated all season.
Knights will always field a solid team, K'boro will inevitably finish between 4th and 7th, Clarence have improved but are still along way off but Laun City will be the surprise packet for season 2025..
The Port have lost too many players and will come back to the pack.
Kingborough haven’t been around for 40 years.
Can you enlighten me as to how you came to that conclusion?
Oh dear here come the Clarence haters. Nobody mentions them but some sad sack decides its an opportunity to stick the boots in.
Oh yes. All that money wasted
Population wise, clubs like knights, Clarence, south, Devonport and all launie clubs have bigger pools of players to choose from. Kingborough covers a lot of ground yes, but the number of people who play the sport is lower in Kingston when compared to clubs in Hobart and launie
Kingborough need much more than that. Every year they are noisy in preseason but when the season proper starts they will struggle all year, as per usual.
Your clueless mate.
Always living in the past you old blokes are. I’d rather my club have a bright future and no past than a golden past and no future like Clarence.
Another pathetic potshot at Clarence from a loser behind a keyboard.
What bright future do you see? Your 3 best players have left, your GK import has 1 more year then he can't play, you're other GKs are no where near good enough the u21s team hasn't ever been any good. You have nice facilities and that's it. If NPL ever goes to 6 teams you're in trouble. Bright future more like blown future
There are players wasted on SH
As for $$ it’s a facade to lock them in !
Because playing at a dog park is so much better
You’re even more clueless…
This weekends pre seasons against mainland sides in NPL have just shown a glimpse of how far behind we are ,south's are stacked with all the talent they could muster from the state and are still never ever going to compete in one of their competitions ,same as Knights although they are not dreaming the same dream as South's
It’s mind blowing how delusional you are thinking kingborough isn’t in the top 3 clubs.
