Glenorchy Knights drew 3-3 with Nelson Eastern Suburbs in a pre-season friendly at Prince of Wales Bay on Thursday night.

Knights were without several injured players, including goalkeeper Ben Peter, who has a groin strain, and striker Corey Smith, who has a sore knee.

The match was played in 30-minute thirds.

Knights led 1-0 at the end of the first third, but Nelson did hit the woodwork.

The second third ended with Knights leading 3-1.

Nelson’s Bill Hanley then scored twice more to complete his hat-trick and ensure that the match ended as a 3-3 draw.

Hanley’s first came shortly after the start of the second third, while his second goal was a penalty.

His third was from a free-kick at the corner of the penalty area. The keeper got his fingers to the ball but could not keep it out.

“It was a good hit out for us and I thought we played quite well after an ordinary start,” said Nelson coach, Michael Roach.

“It wasn't a full strength Knights team and we were also looking at some players in different positions and rotating 16 players as well, but I think we got a lot out of the game.

“Bill Hanley, Will Stalker and goal keeper Ollie Burden, in particular, performed really well.

“I’d like to thank Nick Harrison and the Knights again for the game, and Michael Thain also for coming out and refereeing.

“We are playing Zebras on Sunday at Sandown Park as well and that will be another good opportunity for the players to get ready for what will be a tough Summer Cup.”

Knights were missing 8 first team players but it showed that they lack a bit of depth, everyone who wanted to have a run got a run including a couple of players in the last third who have not even trained so it wasn't all bad

Walter, Was Huigsloot the only Knights starting senior player to play? Why would Knights field a weak side?

This result is funny too...

Taroona will struggle this year. perhaps mid tableish.

Mets and Nelson to battle out top spot!

Interesting that everyone bagged out how bad the eagles were to nearly lose to Metro, but noone seems to have a promblem with the same scoreline for knights

Metro for promotion in 2012

Anon 1:08, i think its because most of Eagles senior squad played. The difference here is it appears only ONE Knights senior player played.

8 senior players missing? So Garthie didn't play?

Yeah Knights may have had a few out but so did Nelson. Nelson were missing Andrew Gaskell, Cody Flynn, Pat Lenck, Craig stockdale (If he stays with nelson, Troy Hoppit.

Nelson lost the three "Mills" at halfway through. Adam, Nathan, Ryan.

Was that one player Huigy, Roberts or Nowicki?

Eagles were missing first team players so i don't see why this result is any different. Eagles were missing Chriss Wass (Captain), Michael Anderson(2010 B&F), Blayne Hudson, Ethan Menzie and their main goal scorer Adam Mckeown only played 5 minutes out of the 90 minutes. They also had their whole reserve and U/19 side come on in the second half as they were coming on top of Metro after 45 mins. I would love to know if some of the comments getting thrown around about Eagles are from players at other clubs. If so please put your name on it so we can see how you personally go against the Eagles ;)

Eagles players that took the field in the 1st half made Shane kent look toned and quick.

Anonymous at 5.47. Maybe Eagles should have sent those blokes on first then instead of the blokes that got 3 goals wacked in against them.

Mckeown wouldn't have done any good anyway. The ground was crap remember so it wouldn't have suited him.

Anon 5:13pm, Stockdale is long gone unfortunately for Nelson.

The rest of those guys, who are they?

I'm sure 70 percent of comments on here are from current players. Who else would bother reading this thing?!

Practice matches are just that...i am sure if you look at the AFL last season top teams would of had mixed results in these games....makes for good conversation though...bad time to take your eye off the prize....thought it was about giving people an opportunity and seeing if they fill the criteria to a team formula....however its still nice to play well and win during the process

Not sure that Metro and Nelson will fight out top 2. Should be a close Div 1 competition this year and pre season practice matches tell you nothing. Can't see Nelson improving a lot this year having lost the experience of Gordon and Stockdale and not picking up any one of note

Anonymous said...

Exactly, practice matches are purely to experiment. Results like this mean NOTHING. Lets move on...

each coach will have his own idea of what he wants to achieve from a practice game. there may also be pressure to bear from elsewhere, which may unfortunately influence the coach's decisions. practice games against other clubs are an extension of training and should be treated as such. most times they will not tell us much about how teams will perform during the season as evidenced by the two recent draws between div 1 and spl clubs. lets see how the div 1 clubs go in the summer cup.

Summer cup is probably not all about results for some coaches either, it just depends where your team is at.

Knights had heaps unavailable as they do this weekend, come the season we will see. They tried to give everyone who was there a game which obviously cost them.

Taroona will win div 1.

Nelson and Metro....... Nelson are terrible and Metro got a result against one of the worst teams in the SPL

Anonymous at 3.12. Seeing as you put your blog on the site before the finish of the Metro v Olympic game, I'm sure yout talking about the Metro V Eagles game. Well the Eagles aren't as bad as Olympic then, Metro beat them.

And as for your comment about Knights tried to give a game to everyone that was there, does that mean the ones that turned up ?

Fantastic for Knights if it did. They must be really looking forward to this season.

Get Fish back.

Love it !
