All the pieces fall into place for South Hobart

Photo:  It was a bleak start to winter for Clarence Zebras' Kyle Vincent.  He missed a great chance late in the second half to make it 1-1 against South Hobart.  He had a hard day at the office in the absence of the suspended Sam Tooze. [PlessPix]

South Hobart moved to the top of the NPL Tasmania standings on Saturday when they won and two of their major rivals slipped up.

South Hobart beat sixth-placed Clarence Zebras 1-0 away at Wentworth Park through a 3rd-minute goal by Austins Yost.

The assistant referee had his flag raised, but after being consulted by the referee, the goal was allowed to stand.

The home side found South Hobart at probably their lowest ebb, but were unable to take advantage.

South had their chances, but poor finishing meant they were unable to increase their lead in the 87 minutes remaining after their opening goal..

Clarence Zebras, on the other hand, had at least two gilt-edged chances near the end but incredible misses cost them the chance of at least a draw.

If South go on to win the title, they can look back to this game as being one of the reasons.

In contrast, title challengers Glenorchy Knights and Kingborough Lions United, if they fail to win the title, will look back on this weekend as one which cost them dearly.

Knights went in to the weekend’s games on top of the standings but are now second, 2 points adrift of leaders South Hobart, after being held to a 1-1 draw away to fifth-ranked Launceston City.

In my preview, I called City the x in the title-chase equation and that is exactly what they are proving to be.

Riley Dillon put Knights ahead 6 minutes before the interval, but City’s goal-scoring talisman, Thierry Swaby, equalised 21 minutes before the end to dent the Knights’ hopes and ensure City of a point.

Kingborough Lions United fared even more poorly, going down 4-3 away to second-last Riverside Olympic at Windsor Park.

Toby Harrop’s superb volley and Emanuel Farias’s penalty put Riverside 2=0 up after half an hour before the leagues’ leading marksman, Kobe Kemp, pulled a goal back for the visitors from the penalty spot after an hour to give them hope.

Farias restored Riverside’s two-goal buffer in the 65th minute with an excellent long range lob, while Noah Mies made it one goal the difference again when he netted with 20 minutes remaining.

In a tense finish, William Coert made it 4-2 for the home side before Otto Schwarz hit Kingborough’s third with 3 minutes left to play.

Riverside hung on and put a dent in the Lions’ title aspirations.

Next Monday’s Lakoseljac Cup Final is between Kingborough and Knights and neither side will have gained many positives from this weekend’s performances.

Reigning champions Devonport City got their title run back on track with a 6-1 demolition of bottom-side Launceston United away at Birch Avenue.

Captain Kieran Mulraney put them ahead after just 6 minutes before Declan Zasadny finally produced the goods and scored twice to make it 3-0 just short of the half-hour mark.

Nick Lanau-Atkinson then weighed in with a brace  -  one each side of half-time  -  before Luke Warrener netted a consolation goal for United.

Dairai Mahachi hit Devonport’s sixth in stoppage time just to remind the hosts of who was in control of the contest.

Yes I would love to know the reason the Ref gave the Linesman to overule the off side and award the goal ?

Anonymous said...

Especially with the linesman being in a m7ch better position than the ref

Anonymous said...

The linesman put his flag up as he couldn't tell whether a player in offside position obstructed the view of the keeper, hence his conversation with central ref. That's what good ARs do. Centre ref verified that keeper view not obstructed so goal stands. No offside, clutching at straws.
Watch the replay to confirm.

Because it was clearly onside. Take a look at the footage..a blind man could see that

Anonymous said...

Yep - that was good officiating.

Anonymous said...

So he put his flag up because he wasn’t sure ?

Anonymous said...

Would you prefer he didn't put it up to check and miss a possible offside that he couldn't pick from his side on view? It was about whether a player was impacting keeper view (which he wasn't) not the player who kicked the goal.

It wasn't the scorer who was in question, but a player standing in an offside position, close the the line of sight of the keeper. The central referee confirmed he didn't obstruct the view of the keeper. It's great refereeing because it takes both referees to put their information together to get the correct outcome.

Love all the " experts " saying it was clear from footage taken at the halfway line. Both the linesman and the ref have a better view than you lot. Stop talking out your backsides.

Time to cut NPL to six.

NW - Dev
North - City and River. Scrap united.
South - South, Knights, Kingo and give life to a Southern Champ team. Scrap C.Zebs.

4 rounds of 5 games, 2 x home and away vs each team.

Walter - my comment above was meant to say to remove Riverside too..

My math can't math.

Doesn’t take an “expert” to pause the video..and it wasn’t at the halfway line. Must be a sour Clarence player/supporter

Anonymous said...

12:16 wow you know how to use a pause button. Neither the ref or the linesman have that ability.
Well it wasn't in line with the linesman nor directly behind the ref so you don't really have a clue at all. Must be an upyourself Knights supporter.

829am. Makes a lot of sense.Only hope for the game to survive at any decent level
Unfortunately tho the FT Board wouldn’t have a clue tho. They probably want to bring in another northern team.

Time to just scrap it and only have an Under 21 statewide comp. If you’re at that age and still in Tas playing, it’s probably last chance to get picked up by a club outside of Tas.

Lmao , clearly a CZ hater. None of the Southern champ teams are up to NPL level.

Anonymous said...

Hate is a strong word. I don’t hate C Zebs… But do I think the merger has been a miserable failure? Absolutely, I don’t hide that.

Same old crew would still bag the zebras even if they had beat south’s unfortunately. I’m not a supporter of either side but I applaud the effort all those young guys put in on the weekend. It must be disheartening for them having to read the comments of some of the keyboard football experts on this blog who obviously have not made it past under 12 d division and think they have made the NPL keyboard side

Neither is Clarence's

Some on this blog have done a lot more than you will ever know.

Lol, well here's your chance to put up your credentials champion blogger

My comment to scrap C Zebs isn’t based on the result from the weekend. Or the lads who currently play for them. It isn’t ‘hate’. And I applaud those who are putting in the work.

They could have beat south 10-0 on the weekend, and I’ll still think the merger was a failure.

This is not aimed at the players. It’s aimed at the committees and staff that ruined what was once two proud clubs… same goes for the current Hobart City saga who dissolved the beachside heritage.

I hear Launceston United have made strong moves to desert the position they currently hold on the ladder!
