Looks like three in the NPL title race

At roughly the half-way mark of the NPL Tasmania season, it looks as if only three teams can win the title  -- South Hobart, Glenorchy Knights or reigning champions Devonport City.

The fourth-placed team. Kingborough Lions United, are not out of contention but will need to show greater consistency if they are to snare the title.

South Hobart are top, 2 points ahead of Knights and Devonport.

South will have to be more clinical though if they are to retain pole position.

They thrashed bottom side Launceston United 6-0 at home at South Hobart Oval on Sunday, but should really have doubled that scoreline on the chances.

They made hard work of the win and could have led 3-0 by the time they actually gained the breakthrough in the 9th minute through Jacob Herbert.

Nick Morton, who must have been disappointed at the early chances he missed, made it 2-0 midway through the opening half and it was only 2-0 at the interval.

United had Jack Moakes sent off in the 41st minute after receiving a second yellow card from referee Mr Stratos Plomaritis, who was in charge for his 100th NPL game.

But, South laboured against their 10-man opponents and it took an hour for them to increase their lead to 3-0.

Their final three goals did not come until the last 10 minutes, and one of those was an own-goal, so it was a far from impressive performance from a side that tops the league and has genuine title aspirations.

United’s players, with one or two exceptions, showed poor technique and seem destined to again collect the wooden spoon.

Lakoseljac Cup winners Glenorchy Knights, also took ages to wear down second-last Riverside Olympic at KGV Park.

They were without the suspended striker Stefan Cordwell and took until 3 minutes before half-time to open their account through Thomas Walpole.

Joshua Redfearn struck twice early in the second half and Riley Dillon once to make it 4-0.

Centre-back Jack Glover then showed his attacking prowess with two goals following set-pieces and fullback Matthew Brkic completed the rout in stoppage time.

Emanuel Farias netted a penalty for the visitors in the 72nd minute when the scored was already 5-0, but it was mere consolation goal.

The result kept the Knights’ impressive goal-difference intact and that may yet prove crucial in the final reckoning.

Reigning champions Devonport City are finally getting some benefit from centre-forward Declan Zasadny, who grabbed the opening goal in their 4-1 win over Launceston City at Valley Road on Saturday.

Masi Benjamin, Brody Denehey, a mainstay of their attack, and Japanese import Riku Ichimura netted their other goals.

Kingborough Lions United again needed a severe jolt to wake them up when they hosted Clarence Zebras at Lightwood park on Saturday night.

Ryan Cook gave the visitors an early lead but Noah Mies equalised within a minute.

Kyle Vincent, who appeared frustrated an uninterested at first, restored Clarence Zebras’ lead with an excellent strike just past the half-hour mark, but Alexander Brown levelled within 2 minutes.

Awoken at last from their slumber, the Lions finally hit the front 10 minutes before the break through their talisman, Kobe Kemp.

Player-coach Alfred Hess made it 4-2 for the Lions on the hour, but the visitors refused to surrender.

Five minutes before the end, Jayden Hey netted to make it a goal the difference and Kingborough had to withstand a nervous closing period to collect the 3 points.

Substitute Josh Mathie sent over two dangerous corners in the closing minutes for Clarence Zebras and the home side were a little fortunate to hold on.

One could almost hear the sighs of relief at the end as the Lions returned to their den following the final whistle.

Jayden Hey is class. Get him to a better club.

Anonymous said...

He has been at every club.

Xuan Cappellino to Devonport, scored 4 in the 21’s.

Anonymous said...

Port have to win the title now

Anonymous said...

Nearly needs to be two conferences. City, Zebras, Riverside and Launceston need their own comp! None have progressed at all. All regressed. City have been a waste

City have beaten south in cup and drawn with knights and devonport they aren't far away I'm sure with some players coming in they will improve again after the window

Xuan is a class act.

That signing could change the destiny of the league title,

Agree South should have scored double figures against Launceston but also that Knights score a lot against the bottom teams and very very little against their closest rivals South and Devonport 1 in each NPL game this season … this week will show where Knights are really at if they can’t score against the big boys then their great GD means little and they can kiss their title hopes away

Anonymous said...

Errr I think that's the case for Devonport and south against knights aswell isn't it? Goal difference may come into play so well done knights

Anonymous said...

Let's hope so. Would much rather see Port or South win the title.

Devonport on track to win another npl title, wouldn't surprise me either after bringing Xuan in and also getting rid of Calamatta for Higgins from Zebras. Only 2 points off the top after having a so called 'poor start' to the year

Knights spend too much $$ on their starting 11 not too win the league

Anonymous said...

South will win the WSL they are back and have the best players and the best GK with Jenna Farrow returning.

Hi Walter, I have just seen that Higgins from Zebras is going to Devenport... I am assuming he was on a contract at zebras, does this mean that Devenport will have to pay zebras a transfer fee to have him play for them? Cheers

Anonymous said...

Anon june 18 1.59pm- No contracts or transfer fees exist. That's why players move around all the time .
Not like the good old days.

Glenorchy Knights 2024 cup winners

Anonymous said...

In correct. Many players are now on professional contracts and compensation can indeed be paid between clubs.

Anonymous said...

Anon 3.55PM.
Never heard of one club paying another compensation for a player transferring.
Reimbursement of original clubs's FT cost/s is not a transfer fee.
This is not compensation but a refund of the admin cost of the original registration paid by the original club.
If this has changed in the last 12 months then I stand corrected.

Anonymous said...

Professional contracts in the NPL Tas? Geez. Surely it’s more Semi Pro at best

Anonymous said...

So they just move on the current goalie, Devonport still the best with som class players ,unlike south that only beat teams below them

Charles Calthrop said...

Given South are top then surely they can only beat teams below them???

Anonymous said...

I believe semi pro and professional contracts are the same thing.

Anonymous said...

South aren't top Devonport is in the WSL ,and Kingbourgh beat them as well, keep up.

Charles Calthrop said...

Sorry, for not keeping up, my mistake, I was referencing the table in Walters article directly above where you find these comments. Perhaps Walter can fix the error and put Devonport back on top rather than 2nd where they are listed. Thanks for your patience with me,

Anonymous said...

Only became a thing when pro contract entered the league

Anonymous said...

Then you have been corrected. If signed to a professional contract a fee can be demanded.

Anonymous said...

Any news then on how much the Higgins transfer fee was? Would be interesting to see

Anonymous said...

If port have paid a transfer fee there will never be any living that down.

Anonymous said...

What’s wrong with paying a transfer fee? That’s how player transfers work in most leagues around the world

Anonymous said...

Small community club image goes out the window

Anonymous said...

Transfer fees existed years ago when players were on a contract with their club but also the governing body.Transfer fees were agreed to on each player contract before signing and this is what was paid should the player wish to move elsewhere.

I agree with you Walter that Vincent looked very disinterested on Saturday night , not sure what’s going on but the few games I’ve seen him play he doesn’t seem to have that click with the rest of the team for some reason

Anonymous said...

I can’t see a WSL table above. You must be confused

Anonymous said...

Tend to disagree . We braved the cold & attended this game. Vincent scored a cracker goal & an outstanding assist. He was well & truly involved in the game with no lacking of his signature speed. Watch the replay mate & count the amount of touches. Maybe also check out the foul Coad ignored which should have been a pen. Blind Freddy couldn’t miss it. Disinterested or pissed off? And yes I’m a faithful Zebras supporter. Who do you play for?

Anonymous said...

I also disagree. I think he looks very lively and puts his body on the line. Looks like a confidence player and I reckon once he starts finishing more, his confidence will grow and he will go to another level. He is clearly hard on himself which might make him seem disinterested. He is at his best when he uses his pace and takes on the opposition. Give the young lad some grace.

And that’s why the play had gone to the other end of the field at one stage and he was still looking at the ground walking at the opposite end ? Not bagging the guy out just stating the obvious that something is not right
