Beachside
and Clarence United drew 1-1 at KGV Park this evening in a pre-season friendly.
Beachside,
the Southern Championship side, had the better of the goalless opening half
against their NPL Tasmania opponents.
But, lack
of composure in front of goal, poor decision making, and at times, less than
perfect technique, let them down.
Beachside
used the width of the pitch to good effect, but the final cross or pass was
often wasted.

Beachside
squandered a great chance from an easy header, while a mis-kick in front of an
open goal also let Clarence off the hook.
Clarence
had three half-chances in response but Beachside survived these situations.
Eight
minutes into the second half, Nic McDonald atoned for his first-half misses by deftly
chipping the ball over the keeper following a quick counter-attack down the
right to put Beachside ahead.
The lead
lasted just 5 minutes as Chris Kannegiesser equalised from close-range on the
left of the 6-yard box after Beachside made a hash of clearing the ball from
their goalmouth.

Clarence
almost snatched a winner late in the game when Jeremy Price rattled the
Beachside crossbar with a free-kick.
Jake French
made his debut for Clarence after transferring from Hobart Zebras.
French
played in goal for the first half-hour and the last 20 minutes, while Matt
Dyson was in goal for the rest of the game.

Clarence United’s new coach, Warren
Burt, said:
“I was
impressed that we were able to move the ball into areas that we wanted to move
it.
“We
defended well and we created some opportunities and that’s all I asked the boys
to do.
“[Jake]
French is our only new player at the moment. But we’ve got Odaine Demar away at
the moment and hopefully he’s coming back.
“He said he’d
come back and definitely play with us.”

Beachside coach, Brett Pullen, said:
“Wonderful. It was an absolute ball. We rotated 19 players today and in our last
game I think we rotated 17 players.
“There were
two or three that played both so we’ve got a nice depth in the squad.
“I think we
had five under-18s play today and the same the other day.
“We’re
working on intensity at the moment to get our fitness up, but they’re all
playing for each other and that’s all you can ask for.
“If they
keep doing that, then we’ll have a go.
“If we’d
put away the chances that we had, we would have won by a little bit, but at
this time of the year, I haven’t done any shooting practice yet.
“There’ve
been other things and I’ve been happy with what we’ve worked on, but the shooting
practice will come.
“It was
good. It was good fun.”

Clarence seriously need to recruit players otherwise its pretty much the same as last year. Relegation will surely be on the cards.
its not as if they haven't had enough time. Money needs to be spent.
The only way I can Clarence winning a game is if Riverside and lions are absolute rubbish.
I totally agree with you anon, I watched the game and it never looked like an NPL team playing , as for spending money that’s a no go They don’t have any ! I have a great friend that’s involved in the juniors at Clarence and he informed me committee has done nothing to attract major sponsors or raise the funds needed to at least buy 1 decent player for years now , how long can they last or is it even worth continuing this season ? I think not ! They do have some half decent players and a couple of really good young ones (1 of which from last season Hatcher I think, was not sighted at the game I presume gone to another club ) but it takes more than a few to be competitive . Your right though you would have thought in a Relegation season that they would have gone all out to get a couple of imports to keep them from disappearing for Ever ! I wish them good luck ,, South Hobart For Ever !
I reckon Jake French will at least cut down their 100 goal against record from last season to maybe half that if he stays .The new coach if he can save them from relegation would be highly entitled to Coach Of The Year
Need another centreback couple midfielders and definitely a striker should advertise on their web page try and get some challenge player's like ones stuck in Souths who've been there a while a chance to play npl for clarence
