Devonport sliding down the ladder

Reigning NPL Tasmania champions Devonport City dropped another two points on Saturday when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home at Valley Road by league-leaders Glenorchy Knights.

Knights dropped to second place as a result of the draw, while Devonport slipped to fourth spot.

Four draws in seven outings is most unlike Devonport and they are going to have to improve if they are to retain their title.

The goals in this game both came from defenders, which tells a story of its own.

Tyler Harrison put the visitors in front midway through the first half, but Dominic Smith levelled 10 minutes from the end.

South Hobart are the new leaders and it’s been a while since they have led the pack.

South downed Launceston City 2-1 away with Nick Morton scoring both the goals.

Thierry Swaby replied for City.

Kingborough Lions United moved into third place with a 5-0 home win against bottom-side Launceston United at Lightwood Park.

The game was goalless for the first 45 minutes, largely due to some excellent saves from the visiting keeper, Noah Curtis.  He did exceptionally well to turn a chip from Alexander Brown over the bar.  The league’s leading marksman, Kobe Kemp, also went close when his shot scraped the outside of the right-hand post.

The visitors couldn’t keep up the momentum in the second half and Noah Mies finally broke their resistance with a goal 2 minutes into the second half.

Two goals by Kemp within 10 minutes of each other midway through the half broke the visitors’ resistance completely.

Otto Schwarz came on as a substitute and within 15 minutes made it 4-0, while Jacob Huigsloot completed the scoring with Kingborough’s fifth 9 minutes from the end.

Launceston United’s Angelo Amato, apparently responding to aggravation from some rowdy Kingborough supporters behind the goal, was sent off with 6 minutes to go.  Launceston United coach, Lino Sciulli, also responded and was shown the yellow card.

Clarence Zebras grabbed their second win of the league season with a 2-1 success away to second-last Riverside Olympic.

James Pelletier put Riverside into an early lead, but goals by Tom McKernan and Jayden Hey within 4 minutes of each gave the visitors all three points.

Dev got no decent forwards. They be lucky to stay in top. 4. United and Riverside are pathetic. South Hobart to win it just ahead of knights and Lions.
