greg downes is the greatest free kick taker to ever grace tasmania

The Referee today at Windsor Park is not up to NPL Standard .

I haven’t been fortunate enough to see any of Greg’s work in that regard but I’ve heard good things. I’d put Jono Ladic forward as one of the best I’ve seen and as I’ve been watching local football for several decades Bernie Klasen as well.

Watching WSl today at South ,was inconsistent very pro South.
The coaches bench for South tends to intimidate the young linesmen.
Noticed when playing there they make calls and carry on.

Gregory Downes scores at least 3 brilliant free kicks every season consistently

If Nathan Coad is the standard to which referees need to aspire to then the game in Tasmania is in some serious trouble. 4 minutes of additional time after a 15 minute extra time period. No second yellow for Bidwell after he took out Cordwell after he had gotten past him, but saw fit for a second yellow for a tired player who had played 120 mins taking too long for a throw. Gave Devonport every chance possible to draw/win the game.

Absolutely correct Barton and mulraney assaulted players all day

Yes. Totally correct. Coad should not have done Penvonport games for that last 3 seasons. He is there 12th player

Haha I love all these comments from couch referees! Go out there and do better.

Agreed. Imagine using this platform to slate a referee yet using a keyboard to do so. Weak

This is in reply to the anonymously left comment that stated a "very pro South" refereeing standard of the WSL statewide league semi between South Hobart and Devonport and what I call very a wishful sense of "intimidation".
I stood next to the fence between both technical areas, where I do nearly every South Hobart WSL match day, and I heard Alastair talk to Alfonso once in frustration due to Alfonso letting a quick free kick go when he was communicating with a defender who should have been in the field position of where the play continued.
While after the last defender tackle by Sophie Westwood, the Devonport manager went on a tirade of conjunction with the fourth official for the rest of the match. To a point he must have embarrassed himself as he stood up and put his arm around the fourth official for an extended period.
I'm not sure what intimidation this person saw, let alone bias, but I believe they had their Devonport googles well attached that day.

I agree Richard. Luckily they had goggles on to see all 5 hit the back of the net.

Same old south never taking ownership, they are a good footballing side but everyone knows it's called the theatre of dreams for a reason..

There was another Downes who played NPL, I believe his name is Chris (not sure if related to Greg). He is on par with Greg in terms of free kick taking ability.

Geez Borough made a meal of it didn’t they, given two very soft penalties and missed both, obviously scored off the keepers save but……. The free kick and red card to Riversides keeper was justifiable, no issues at all. Felt sorry for the replacement keeper, you just knew what was going to happen, poor sod, his first touch picking the ball out the back of the net. Well taken free kick. Interesting final coming up.

Borough in the final, faced harder teams than both both knights and devonport on the way to the final yet they got lucky?

Anonymous said...

Anon 7.30am May 20. Yep they were lucky to win.

Kingborough appears reliant on their CBs for goal scoring opportunities. Downes with the winner and Huigsloot winning the penalty that resulted in their first goal. Luttmer was also key a few weeks ago getting them to the semi final. Masking some major issues in their frontline at the moment.

Knights are polar opposite. Appear to have recruited exceptionally well in their front half and look dangerous in the final third. How many have their two new attacking signings got between them? Final is shaping up to be a good affair but Kingborough's lack of goals from their forward players might cost them.

Anon may 20.

The fact Devonport and Knights played each other on their way or attempted way to the final suggests they played stronger opponents does it not?

May 20th anon

Who would you rather play in a semi final,

Devonport, Knights or Riverside?

Anonymous said...

Kemp is top goal scorer, not exactly sure how they rely on CB for goals

Anonymous said...

Knights aside, Kemp and Mies have scored more than any other side between the 2 of them. Top tier rubbish comment by 11:43am 😂

Anonymous said...

Relying on defenders for goals you can’t be serious?

Well said 529pm. The facts are there. Kingborough have got 2 of the best goal scorers in the NPL. For a few years now.
Maybe if Devonport were used as an example it would make more sense. They have a decent midfield but no decent forwards.

Tommy Wright I have just watched the replay of the disallowed Lions goal against Riverside, can someone explain why it was disallowed. Genuine question.
