Clarence United were in this game for all of two minutes. That’s how long it took them to score and take the lead.

After that, it was mostly Tilford Zebras, who could have scored twice as many goals as they eventually did.

Clarence leaked goals at the back and squandered some good opportunities up front, which all added up to their second biggest defeat of the season.

Zebras almost scored in less than a minute after Adam Young’s right-wing cross found Jayden Welch, but his shot was tipped over the bar by Cameron Sweeney.

But then, in the 2nd minute, Clarence took the lead as Troy Kaden first saved Ben Hamlett’s shot, only to see his defence switch off and allow Hamlett a second shot from which he scored.

Zebras fought back immediately and Daniel Lapolla chipped just wide in the 11th minute, while Welch should have scored a minute later but swept his effort wide of a post.

In the 14th minute, Dwayne Walsh should have punished his former club but poked his effort wide after Welch’s left-wing cross.

Walsh took matters into his own hands in the 16th minute when he raced down the right and beat Julian McMahon before cutting inside and planting his shot home at the near post to make it 1-1.

In the 25th minute, the Clarence defence was caught flat-footed when Andrew Telega played a long ball out of defence to Welch, who controlled in acres of space and had the simple task of lobbing over Sweeney to make it 2-1 for the home side.

Sam McIntyre headed wide from a Clarence corner in the 31st minute after spoiling the chance for Hamlett, who seemed poised for a strike at goal.

Seconds later, Lapolla had a chance at the other end, but Sweeney parried his shot and claimed the loose ball before a bunch of Zebras attackers could gain possession.

Lapolla went off injured within a minute and was replaced by Luke Engels.

Matt Hall made it 3-1 in the 38th minute after a fine build-up by the Zebras, started by Telega in his own half.

Telega played the ball to Welch and he released Luke Engels down the left. His low cross into the box was completely missed by Walsh, but the ball carried through to Hall, who had time to pick his spot.

Clarence had a good chance in stoppage time at the end of the first half after they earned a corner. Ben Parker headed the corner towards goal and it was only a header off the line by Hall that saved the day for the Zebras.

Telega added the Zebras’ fourth seconds short of the hour mark following a corner by Luke Engels. Hall’s shot was blocked and, as the ball rolled loose in the box, the Zebras captain struck it home for his second goal in as many games.

Hall volleyed over in the 70th minute as Zebras maintained the pressure and, despite three substitutions in the final quarter of the match, Clarence could not find a way back, their final chance coming in the 88th minute when Kaden produced a fine save from McIntyre.

The win put Zebras on top of the ladder, a point ahead of South Hobart, while Clarence remain in third-last place.

· Tilford Zebras coach, Romeo Frediani, said:

“Yeah, it wasn’t bad. We worked on a few things last week at training, or during the week, and we came out and did exactly what we worked on.

“We used our strengths, which is a lot speed on the flanks, and we got in behind them and capitalised and put chances away for a change, which is nice.

“We could have scored another three or four at least, but we’ve got to be happy with 4-1.”

· Clarence United striker, Luke Cripps, said:

“Well, we just didn’t play to feet in the first half.

“They took their chances and played well.

“We were unlucky a couple of times and probably could have had three or four as well, but we didn’t deserve to win.

“It’s always nice to put one in early, but I don’t know why we leaked goals at the back because that was our strength last year.”

South Hobart should continue on top of Premier League ladder

Forestry Tasmania Southern Premier League leaders South Hobart will be without central defender Hugh Ludford when they host bottom-side Olympia Warriors at South Hobart on Saturday.

Ludford is unavailable, which means Matthew Brown is likely to step into the breach.

David Abbott will need to pass a fitness test before being considered for selection.

South Hobart have had three or four Korean players training with them this week, including an excellent central defender.

Coach Ken Morton, whose ambition for the club seem to stretch beyond the Tasmanian Premier League, hopes to have at least two Koreans cleared, registered and ready for selection in the next couple of weeks.

Morton will treat Olympia with respect, but stick to his own game plan.

Olympia improved last weekend when they drew 2-2 with New Town Eagles, but the task on Saturday seems beyond them on current form.

And, they have eight players missing, which has coach Chris Hey devastated.

Hugh Richardson, Kosta Grillas, Jayden Hey, Nick Meredith, Chris Kumpulainen, Mark Wakefield, Adam Hedge and Warren Awaru are all out injured or unavailable.

The really bad news is that Grillas is out for up to a month with a hamstring injury and Hey will miss six weeks because of a broken toe.

They still have a respectable squad, however, and may prove stubborn opponents.

Olympia's squad is: Nester, McCallum, Labski, Percy, Wiggins, Powell, Mason, Phillips, Cronk, Kunwar, Fletcher, Farrugia, Howell, Matthew Hedge, Emmanuel Tsakiris.

This squad could still do damage and South Hobart will need to be wary. You know what they say about a wounded bull.

New Town Eagles, who are level on one point with Olympia at the foot of the ladder, welcome Taroona to Clare Street on Saturday.

Eagles will have Steve Louden back in defence, but Chris Wass is a doubtful starter because of injury.

Eagles coach George Krambousanos said that Taroona had acquitted themselves well in the top flight so far, but the larger Clare Street ground would test the visitors.

Taroona coach, Ben Horgan, said: “No doubt George will have them well prepared for this game, so it will be a tough one, but it is a game we need to win to consolidate our solid start to the season.

“I don’t expect to make any changes to the starting line-up from last weekend’s draw with Clarence.”

Glenorchy Knights travel to Lightwood Park on Saturday to take on Glenorchy Knights in what should be a close match.

The Lions will be without central-defender Isaac Lucas, who suffered cracked ribs in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tilford Zebras.

Lions striker Greg Freeman has a corked thigh and must pass a fitness test before he plays, while midfielder Marcello Marchioli also pulled up sore but should be fit to play.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of the Knights,” said Kingborough coach, Geoff Freeman. “It’s always a tough game.”

Belanic to coach in Hobart over Easter

Former New Town Eagles goalkeeper, Zlatko Belanic, will be in Hobart over the Easter school holiday period to conduct coaching clinics for junior and senior goalkeepers and coaches.

The visit, beginning on 7 April, was organised by former Eagles star, Andrew Leszczynski, who was a team-mate of Belanic in the Eagles side of the early 1990s.

Belanic returned to Adelaide in 1997 after a successful Tasmanian career.

He ran his own goalkeeping school and was a writer for the “Australian Soccer Times” magazine.

Belanic also coached at Metro Stars, Metro United and Croydon Kings.

During an under-20 international challenge tournament in Adelaide in 2003, he was the liaison officer for the visiting Hajduk Split side from Croatia, which won the tournament and beat the Australian Institute of Sport, Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool along the way.

Belanic was the senior assistant coach and the goalkeeping coach for the South Australian Institute of Sport women’s team from 2002 to 2005.

Belanic holds the FFA and AFC ‘B’ coaching licence and it will be well worth attending his coaching sessions while he is in Hobart.

More information can be obtained from Andrew Leszczynski (0408 611 093) or the New Town Eagles club (www.newtowneagles.com).
