16th A-League meeting between Adelaide and Jets ends in tame goalless draw

Adelaide United drew 0-0 with Newcastle Jets in their A-League match at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide this evening.

It was a mere 3 degrees in Adelaide and 8,479 fans showed up to watch the first scoreless draw between these sides in 16 meetings.

Newcastle were the better side but they were unable to beat an Adelaide side that was missing key players Travis Dodds and Marcos Flores.

It was the first match in charge for Adelaide’s new Dutch coach, Rini Coolen.

Adelaide did have the ball in the net in the 68th minute through Daniel Mullen, but the effort was disallowed because Sergio Van Dijk was off-side.

Newcastle’s Adam D’Apuzzo had one of the best of the few chances in the match when he ran on to a pass to the left by Michael Bridges in the 19th minute, but his poor shot was parried wide by the goalkeeper, Eugene Galekovic, and then cleared.

The most exciting action came just before the interval when a poor tackle by Adelaide’s Paul Reid saw all 22 players involved in a melee near the centre-circle, but it was soon quelled by the officials and the cooler headed players.
