Glenorchy Knights twice led the Tasmanian Institute of Sport in this match, but twice they were pegged back.

When the TIS finally took the lead early in the second half, the Knights seemed in trouble. But, a penalty 7 minutes from the end drew them level and a clever goal three minutes from time gave them victory.

Scott Gallacher was in charge of the TIS in the absence of Dean May, but the team started the game in characteristic efficient style and almost hit the front after just 7 minutes when Jeremy Walker made a fine run down the right and picked out Hugh Foley with his cross. Foley’s shot appeared scuffed, however, and the ball came back off the left-hand post. It was not cleared and the Knights were lucky when a defender deflected Sam Hamilton’s shot from the left over the bar.

The Knights took a shock lead in the 18th minute through James Hope, whose shot from 25 metres caught keeper Tristan Prendergast by surprise.

The TIS were level in the 22nd minute when Hugh Foley’s right-wing cross looped over keeper Brad Grainger and was turned into his own net by Robbie Bolonja.

Mathew Nowicki restored the Knights’ lead from close range 6 minutes before the interval when the TIS defence seemed to dither and failed to clear the ball.

Declan Foley then fired home from the edge of the box in the 43rd minute to make it 2-2 at the break.

Hamilton might have sent the TIS into the break with the lead, but his shot from the left in stoppage time flashed across the face of goal and flew past the far post.

Seven minutes after the resumption, Hugh Foley pounced on Jamie De Smit’s square ball inside the box and beat Grainer to make it 3-2 for the TIS.

Knights coach Zac Baltic then made three changes in the space of 23 minutes and his side clawed their way back into the game, inspired on the field by Matt Russell, who made his debut for the seniors last weekend.

In the 83rd minute, a long throw-in from the right by Russell was handled by Lucas Hill and Mr Thain awarded Knights a penalty, which was converted n flamboyant fashion by Bolonja, who thereby atoned for his first-half own-goal.

With 3 minutes remaining, Russell slipped the ball through the middle for substitute Jack Harrison to turn in for the winner.

TIS were unlucky not to snatch an equaliser when Eli Luttmer's downward header from a corner scraped the top of the crossbar and went out for a goal-kick.

· Glenorchy Knights coach, Zac Baltic, said:

“It’s a great result for the lads.

“The boys finally played the way I’ve been asking them to play for the last seven or eight weeks.

“It’s difficult at training when you don’t have every player there, but we’ve been trying to play the way the TIS play and I’m happy to say we beat them at their own game.

“We kept possession pretty well and played wide balls and through balls, so I was quite happy and positive. In fact, I predicted before the game that we’d win.

“If the boys continue like this, playing the way they played, and keeping their shape and structure, I think in the next two or three games we’ve got left, they should be winnable as well.”

rumour had it, that dr phil was at the tis game?

Anonymous said...

he was, watching chalky (who was actually matt nowicki) slot it through to jack for the winner

Anonymous said...

as soon as chalky was moved into midfield knights got on top. it was a good game from both sides. tis were the silkier team but knights definitely wanted it more

Is is just me or did knights have too many drop backs?

Drop Backs?

What are drop backs? Do you mean players who play seniors?

The only two from the week before were Nowicki and Chalky and they are normally in the reserves anyway?

Good one Dr. Phil, keep complaining

drop kicks?

Eli Lutmer's downward header scraped the top of the crossbar? My word he must have got up high to it!

rumour has it, Knights have been penalised for dropping 5 players down from last Saturdays 1st team. so will be a 3-0 win to TIS.

Great pose by Razor Ray Green in one of the pics...great Knights club man. Robi Bolonja's penalty was pure class.
TIS lost a bit when the dark haired central midfielder/striker came off in the second half.
Some good players there, interesting to see where they end up once leave they TIS.
All in all an entertaining match which could have gone either way, unfortunetely most of the goals were from bad goalkeeper or defensive blunders.

TIS 3 v Glenorchy Knights 0

This is the official score on the FFT webpage.

Drop Backs would be players who have taken the field in the seniors last game... not surprising you can't count but if you check walter's teams then you can see atleast 4

Only 2 of those players started for Knights the week before and the others came on as late subs because Knights have players injured.

Funny rule regarding the mid week games, where are you suppose to pull your players from if you have had injuries?

If Glenorchy Knights needed a few more players they could have taken a few players from the Under 19s that is what developing players is all about. It looks like the Knights tried to win at all costs but got caught out.

Nowicki - 17, Robb - 17, Harrison - 15, Minnucci - 19, Roberts - 19, Sherman - 19, Hopes 19, Mrzyk - 19, Griffin - 19; all played for the reserves. Knights u/19's team are all 13-14 year old's making them ineligible. I think our development program isn't going too bad considering the state it was in two years ago, we are just missing a year or two in between at this stage.

all of the knights u19s havnt been accesd to play reserves and seniors as thy r onli 13

Knights could not use players from the under 19 team as most are to young, and even if they did only 3 could then drop back down on saturday

great year for the tis, they really showed some form for how young they are.

Dunno but TIS lost on the night 4-3so who cares.

very rough on knights if the resulf has gone against them. they only reason they had some players more up from reserves was because three of the starting senior players where out. if you look at the team really none of the ones who dropped back are first team starters every week for the seniors anyway and most weeks play in the reserves then sit on the bench for the seniors. roberts is the only exception but his last game was in the reserves anyway so it doesnt matter.

they lost cause they were versing glenorchy seniors

Not sure why the Knights shouldn't have to follow the same rules as all of the other clubs. I'm sure most clubs have had to deal with injury issues throughout the year. Anyway don't they have a div 2 team they could have used players from?

Anonymous said...

All of those players have basically played reserves all season for Knights.

Doesn't even matter anyway it's not like it was for top of the ladder.

Good one Knights

Shouldnt the drop down rule only apply in the same round of matches ? That is the same round that the u19, reserves and seniors all participate in ? If a club senior and reserves side play on a Friday , they may only drop 3 players from reserves to u19.This minimises stacking of u 19 teams on the Saturday after the Friday night in which the reserves and seniors played in . This rule then cannot be applied to matches involving the TIS as there is no
u19 and senior teams involved, or am I missing something ?

Shows that the tis would not hold their own in the premier league, gettin beat by a very weak glenorchy reserves/senior team.

I would like to know how many times those Knights players have started in seniors this year.

Senior games started this season would look a bit like this;

Chalky Russell 1
Roberts 5 or 6 - didnt play week before at all, but game before was seniors.
Nowicki - about 4
Hopes - about 4
Vavoulas 0
Robb 0

Not really senior players given the season is 19 games in. The last 3 played about 10 minutes each in seniors and Roberts not at all last game.
Rules are rules and it sounds like Knights people involved didn't do their appropriate due diligence however in the spirit of the game i think if Knights really wanted to win badly and expose the rule they would have dropped their better senior players like Amadou, Ben Peter, Alex Holmes, Jade Clay, Josh Fielding etc, so clearly they didnt do that.

Whether Knights officially lose the game on forfeit or not, is just there for the history books as won't have a bearing on ladder given no finals or possible change of positions but its fair to say they didn't make this error on purpose looking to bend the rules.

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN WHY NORMAL RULES FOR DROPPING PLAYERS APPLIES TO EVERY CLUB EXCEPT TIS. AND IF YOU REPLY WITH "THEY DONT HAVE SENIOIRS OR U19'S" THEN THEY SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED TO PLAY FOR POINTS IN THE RESERVES COMP. ITS A JOKE. AND BEFORE YOU REPLY WITH "BUT ITS ABOUT DEVELOPING YOUTH" I AGREE!!!! SO DONT PLAY FOR POINTS AND LET CLUBS FIELD THEIR BEST UNDER 17 SIDE TO PLAY TIS MIDWEEK. SURELY BETTER FOR CLUBS AND TIS..... FFT ALLOWING TIS TO PLAY FOR POINTS THE LAST TWO YEARS HAS COST CUFC FOR EXAMPLE AN U19'S TITLE AND (IF THEY BEAT SOUTH TOMORROW NIGHT) A RESERVES TITLE.

can anyone pick one player from that knights side who would start every week for the semiors?

Anonymous said...

Well done to the TIS on a fine 3-0 victory! Way to keep a clean sheet boys!

Can someone explain why there is a person who still thinks it's cool to write in all caps as if that makes his message stronger?

Alex Holmes....Jade Clay...josh Fielding..Armadu..Huigsloot..Googsy obviously a knights legend..is this his last season???

Firstly, I do not understand what is meant by rules not applying to TIS. When we played the TIS they only had one sub due to injuries they did not bring players in from interstate. Apparently they have a squad of 15 and do not back fill unless the keeper is injured then they grab the FFT U15 keeper. This rule for drop backs has been around for years so clubs need to be aware of them. I think it is great the TIS are playing PL reserves but based upon some of the drubbings they have handed out perhaps a better solution would be for clubs to be allowed to play their best U20 players as that would even things up. Let’s stop being negative.
