Holger Osieck, 61, is the new coach of the Socceroos.
The announcement was made from Slovenia this afternoon. The Socceroos play Slovenia tomorrow morning [Eastern Australia Time] in a friendly.
Osieck, a German, comes to the job with impressive credentials.
He was assistant to Franz Beckenbauer when Germany won the World Cup in 1990.
He has coached the Canada national team and was, most recently, coach of the biggest club in Asia, Urawa Reds of Japan.

Tasmanian goalkeeper Alex Cisak, 21, made his debut for English Division Two club Accrington Stanley over night in a 2-1 Carling Cup win over Doncaster Rovers.
Cisak played for South Hobart before moving to the UK and joining Leicester City as a youth player.
He has represented Australia at Under-20 level.

Thanks, Spectator. Fixed.
I have no idea about this new Coach, he seems a bit old, he will be 65 in Brazil 2014.
Time will tell

What is the worry.......is the new coach gonna play?
well I would rather a younger coach that has come through the new coaching generation than an old fart who is friends with Lowy.
your a monkey anon 5.55pm, look up alex ferguson and guus hiddink, by brazil 2014, guus hiddink will be 68 and ferguson 72, would you take either of them?
Jamie de Smit of t.i.s was on 'football stars of tomorrow' (one hd) tonight. he scored the 'goal of the week'. well done to him

Have you seen this blokes record? It's not even worth really talking about in the same sentance as Guus and Sir Alex.
Intersting to see what system we will play under him. This country can't afford to see another 4 years of 4-2-3-1 defensive crap.
If we play attacking football he will be a good selection!!!!!
Why are we ALREADY being negative about this bloke? Give him a chance and judge him on what he does for us, not what he has done for others!
This guy could be a perfect match for the socceroos - who knows? No-one until we have seen him in action.
John Van't Schip (new Melbourne Heart coach) would have been a better appointment.
Assistant Beckenbauer he cant be all that bad and he is German after all they do know their football. Time will tell
these comments show how under educated tasmanian football fans really are
I wonder if he will put down the A-league like PIM did?
A-League looks good this season.
Anon 10.57. Maybe Pim was being honest and trying to help those players that really want to play for their country to go elsewhere to better themselves. In my opinion it is no longer good enough to just play for Australia ,if you are serious. We should now expect to really test the big guns in the world. Mediocrity is not acceptable any longer. The Socceroos have proved that they can match it , but only with a team of players used to playing at a higher standard than the A League. Pim is 100% correct.
