Devonport unimpressive in win over Clarence Zebras

Devonport City struggled to beat Clarence Zebras 2-0 at Wentworth Park today.

The win increased their lead at the top of the NPL Tasmania ladder to 3 points.

Glenorchy Knights moved into second place with a 2-0 away win over Riverside Olympic at Windsor Park.

Nick Naden scored the opener for the visitors midway through the first half, while Joffrey N’Koso sealed the result with Knights’ second shortly after the interval.

The Knights’ bus broke down in the Midlands and the team made it to the ground shortly before the scheduled kick-off.

Olympia Warriors’ fortunes have changed and they got their second win in a row with a 2-1 win over the visiting Launceston City at Warrior Park.

After having been bottom two weeks ago, the Warriors are now fourth, while Launceston City remain stranded at the foot of the table.

Clarence Zebras managed to hold Devonport goalless until late in the match, when two goals in 2 minutes by substitute Todd Hingston and winger Brody Denehey gave the visitors the 3 points.

Thomas Little and Kane Hatcher played well at the back for Clarence Zebras, while Luke Huigsloot did a lot of work when dropping deep into defence.

Ryan Cook played in midfield and goalkeeper Joshua Jones produced a brave performance and took a physical battering but completed the game.  He regularly dived at the feet of opponents and sustained a few knocks to the head.

Joel Stone was the pick of the Devonport side, while goalkeeper Nathan Pitchford was unbeatable.  His save from a low drive by Jayden Hey saved Devonport’s bacon.

Devonport were on top in terms of the statistics and had many more shots on goal than Clarence Zebras, but their performance, which often featured hit-and-miss long balls, lacked polish.

Denehey went close on a couple of occasions, but Miles Barnard had few chances.  Raphael Reynolds was the most composed defender for Devonport and always looked for a team-mate with his passes.

Olympia Warriors went ahead against Launceston City in the opening minute through Jack Ryan.

Ryan made it 2-0 with a penalty in the 32nd minute and he had another shot before half-time that struck the woodwork.

Launceston City lacked height at the back with Alex Rossetto used in attack and it was he who pulled a goal back for the visitors 8 minutes from the end.

Olympia, who had Lucas Hill in defence after a long absence through injury, held out for the win.

They managed to string together a few moves involving more than three passes, which makes them something of an oddity in Tasmanian football, but they still lack that finishing touch.

Ben Hamlett was an absentee and his speed and aggression were missed in attack.

Nick Mearns was his usual hard-working self in midfield and he might have scored on one occasion but his shot was tame and directed straight at City goalkeeper Daniel Nash.

Don't think I've heard as much foul language as I did today at Olympia. On the livestream you could clearly hear the coaches on the opposite side and the players (which i love).

The amount of F bombs though was unacceptable and under the laws of the game a couple of players and one coach should have been marched. Just mho.

Clabras were not bad today, made it very difficult for Devonport and created chances on the counter. The young keeper was superb and actually thought Walshy played quite well in a more advanced role. While Devonport dominated the majority of the game, they don't seem to have the cutting edge at the moment. That could be a good sign for them, that if they do start clicking , they'll be unstoppable but a pretty poor performance. Some of the chances missed was school boy stuff... Barnard looks lost and is a shell from last season. Strikers play to him like he's a Braydon Mann type who can link in with the build up, pick a pass and create his own scoring chances, but Barnard needs balls in the air, in the box and on his head to be lethal. Denehey missing too many chances, Bidwell easily predictable. If their front 3 plays like that in games where they don't have many chances, they will lose games against the better sides.

hamlet pulled up sore or injured in the warm up which I thought put city in the game even though they had a few missing from their line up.

The Championship results have made things interesting. I would never thought that South would beat United and Eagles inflicted their first defeat and the best team in the comp Uni absolutely destroyed Beachside.
What's happening with Beachside as their season looks over and not the team that has caused havoc for a few years.

Just watched the replay Walter and I’m with you, I thought the two young Clarence boys Jones the keeper and Hatcher the little fella at the back were outstanding for their team .Talk about courage from a young keeper I’ve rarely seen anything like it before it was a gold star performance and with a bit more support would have kept a clean sheet , brilliant , As for the little back he just never let Bidwell into the game and Kudos to him as well ! A much improved effort from the cellar dwellers as both sides had to endure bad conditions.

Simple mute your livestream if you don’t like what you were hearing

Being at the game live, I was disappointed in both teams' inability to have players move into position quickly enough to support the player on the ball when they were in possession.

Moreover, the Attacking Transitions were problematic. That is when the team regains the ball after the opposition has lost it. Neither team quickly ran into space to support the player on the ball as they were receiving it to open a viable passing lane.

The notable exception was a brilliant bit of play. Strikers' keeper Pitchford came out to the edge of his penalty box, made a difficult interception and launched the ball immediately with a pin point throw to the winger, Brodie Denehy, who received and ball carried into the Clabras half, with another neat pass to a teammate who nearly scored. It was a wonderful counter attack.

Strikers were the better team and deserved to win . At times they built up efficiently from the back. This is third game I've seen Clabras and they have been a massive disappointment.
