Great day for football on final day of cup final action

Saturday’s end of the 2020 season with three cup finals at KGV Park in fine spring weather was a great success.

Attendance was limited to 1,000 because of COVID restrictions and if it hadn’t been for that, I reckon there would have been 2,000 there.

Olympia Warriors missed out on the treble.

The club was in all three cup finals but won only one, the Men’s Under-20 Statewide Cup, where they thrashed Glenorchy Knights 7-0.

New club Clarence Zebras won their second piece of silverware this year after the Summer Cup by winning the Women’s Statewide Cup 3-0 against Women’s Super League champions, Olympia Warriors.

And, the major prize of the day, the Lakoseljac Cup, was won by Glenorchy Knights, who beat Olympia Warriors 2-1 in a highly entertaining game of very good football.

Knights fell behind to an early goal against Olympia.

In the 4th minute, a headed clearance by Oscar Thomas fell straight to Adam Gorrie outside the box and he unleashed a fierce curling shot sliced with the outside of the right foot and inside the right-hand post past a vainly diving keeper, Lachlan Hart.

Knights drew level in the 20th minute when Alex Bellini floated a free-kick from wide on the left over keeper Elliot Hoysted and in off the far right-hand post.

Ben Hamlett had a glorious chance to restore Olympia’s lead in the 27th minute when he gained possession after an error by Hart, but with Hart in no-man’s land and the goal gaping, Hamlett lobbed the ball wide of the right-hand post.  It was a miss that would come back to haunt Olympia.

The second half was a tense affair and Lucas Hill’s goal-lone clearance saved Olympia on the hour.

Three minutes later, Hart did well to get down to Nick Mearns’s free-kick and turn the ball out for a corner.

The Knights’ winner came in the 74th minute.  A throw-in on the left wing found Bellini and he knocked the ball inside to Tom Young, who worked his way across the box and past a defender before unleashing a terrific shot into the far right-hand corner of the net.

Neither side managed to score in the last quarter of an hour despite some half-chances and it was the Knights who lifted the trophy named after one of the most prominent past strikers.

Clarence Zebras hit the front against Olympia Warriors after just 2 minutes through Danielle Kannegiesser and they never looked back.

Clarence Zebras were resolute in defence, creative in midfield and dangerous in attack against an Olympia side that seemed overawed by the occasion and never really got going.

Bonnie Davies showed her usual speed, but her runs invariable ended with shots that were way off the mark.  Clarence Zebras also tackled her with gusto when required and Olympia’s main threat never materialised.

In fact, if it was not for excellent goalkeeping by Jenna Farrow, Clarence Zebras might have doubled the score.  Farrow was brave and technically good and prevented several almost certain goals.

It took an own-goal by Olympia’s Maddie Black 5 minutes into the second half to make it 2-0 for Clarence Zebras.

In the 76th minute, Farrow did well to save a dangerous shot from Zoe Nichols, only to see Louisa Marmion score easily from the rebound and give Clarence Zebras a well-deserved 3-0 win.

It was mainly one-way traffic in the Men’s Under-20 Statewide Cup Final, and that was in the direction of Glenorchy Knights’ goal.

Lutfi Baddiley headed Olympia into the lead after just 2 minutes from a Sammuel Cummins free-kick from the left, while Koby Moschogianis made it 2-0 in the 17th minute with a header from Tyson Barrett’s cross from the left.

Barrett netted in stoppage time at the end of the first half to make it 3-0 for Olympia at the interval.

Abdelrahman Azab added the fourth shortly after the resumption, while Barrett completed his brace in the 57th minute with a header from Bilal Ait Maamar’s right-wing cross to make it 5-0.

Azab’s goal 8 minutes from the end made it 6-0, while Evan Arnold completed the scoring in the first minute of stoppage time to signal Olympia’s first and only trophy of the day.

It's time to seriously call out the foul behaviour towards the female players during the final.

Those that witnessed the antics should at the very least be formally complaining to FT and then some sort of sanction against the relevant club can be taken.

Complaints were made during the match to FT but, unfortunately, nothing was done about it. Was even mentioned to a Glenorchy Knights committee member, but they just laughed about it.

Good day of football to end the season, but the way FT handled the NPL Tas awards was nothing short of embarrassing and an insult to the winners. There is still no mention of them on the FT facebook or twitter pages, or on their website or Slice of Cheese. At least for the NPL Tas and WSL Best and Fairest winners they could have organised a separate press conference during the week and invited the media along to give the players their own moment in the sun, instead of them just being an afterthought during cup day presentations.

Who won the BnFs?!

Totally agree also don’t understand why all the votes can’t be published so clubs and supporters can see who their best performer was .... what’s the big secret ?? Same with rising star who else was nominated ... believe it or not players might like to know ... FFT disappointing yet again

A certain women’s SC1 team was also in the wet area during the women’s match. Why aren’t they being mentioned?

They could have been...by you!!!

Maybe they weren't being a bunch of abusers like some of the Knights supporters.

Bonnie Davies won Best and fairest and Joel Stone won the NPL best and fairest. Hope that helps!
