Daniel Arnaiz scored twice and John Otto once as South Hobart defeated Glenorchy Knights 3-1 in their Development League match at KGV Park today.
South Hobart hit the crossbar and missed several easy chances and the win should have been more emphatic.
In the preliminary round of the Lakoseljac Cup. Taroona beat Metro 2-0 on Friday night, while at KGV Park today, Launceston United downed Nelson Eastern Suburbs 4-1.
Just to jog readers’ memories, Launceston United were Tasmania’s representatives in the Australia Cup in both 1967 and 1968.
Launceston United lost 2-1 in Melbourne to Melbourne Hungaria in 1967 and 1-0 to Melbourne Hakoah in 1968.
They were given a standing ovation by the Victorian crowd after the game against Melbourne Hungaria because of their spirited display and narrow defeat.
It was good to see this former great club participate today in the preliminary round of the Lakoseljac Cup, the winner of which will earn the right to represent Tasmania in the Australia Cup competition.
The FFA Cup has reverted to the name, Australia Cup, in recognition of this truly national competition’s history.
Angelo Amato netted twice for Launceston United today, including a penalty.
The club’s other goals came from Nasin Mohammadi and captain Aiden Rigby.

In the other Lakoseljac Cup match today, Northern Rangers beat University 4-0.

Olympia Warriors beat Riverside Olympic 2-1 in a friendly today at home at Empire Couriers Park.
Anthony Mamic scored both goals for Olympia, who were missing several key players.

In 1967 Launceston United were leading Melbourne Hungaria 1-0 until 3 minutes from the end. Atti Abonyi, who debuted for the the national team that same year, scored one of the two goals that sunk United. Melbourne Hungaria went on to win the competition.
One of United's best players at that time was Graham Smith. Graham passed away only a few weeks ago aged 84. He was a very hard man on the pitch, and a gentleman and scholar off it.
Ken Hackett, as usual, was a star in defence; he was a real stalwart for United, before his return to the UK.
