Gold Coast triumph over leaders Sydney FC, and Pohang Steelers are the Asian champions

Sydney FC stayed on top of the A-League ladder despite losing 1-0 away to Gold Coast United at Skilled Stadium tonight.

The win lifted Gold Coast into third spot, at the expense of the Central Coast Mariners, who had moved into third place after beating second-placed Melbourne Victory 4-0 earlier this evening.

The winning goal came from Shane Smeltz in the 36th minute with a far-post header from Jason Culina’s perfectly delivered right-wing cross.

The attendance was 5,364.

In Tokyo this evening, South Korean side Pohang Steelers won the Asian Champions League final with a 2-1 win over Al Attihad of Saudia Arabia.

The Asian Cup Final was a most disappointing affair. Given the [lack of] quality of these two teams, & the totally predictability & naivety of the play, it makes one wonder about Asian football. At times during the first half, I had to wonder if I was at KGV!

Hi Brian

Do you know the attendance? Being played in Tokyo and with both teams not from Japan, I imagine it would not have been great. And, both Pohang Steelers goals came from set-pieces, did they not?
